This win was never in doubt from what I've seen in the 2nd set. Cerundolo not really good enough to compete with this kid today. Great tournament for Fonseca, fought great the whole week and deserved the title.

Especially congrats to BRAZIL and our dear mrzz...you've got a good one, here.
Thanks for your kindness, El Dude, even if I always found strange fans being congratulated.

And even the congratulation to the Brazilian tennis is not that well earned. There is little structure, and the existing structure is not optimized. We live out of the random out of the curve talent, like Kuerten (from my neighborhood!) and now Fonseca. It will give a boost to local tennis, sure, but it won't change the fundamentals.

This was his 9th ATP level tournament. By comparison, first titles:

Fonseca: 9th (18, 6 months)
Alcaraz: 12th (18, 2 months)
Sinner: 21st (19, 3 months)
Djokovic: 24th (19, 2 months)
Nadal: 25th (18, 3 months)
Federer: 48th (19, 5 months)

I don't know for sure, but I'm guessing Fonseca is the first player in ATP history to win one of first ten tournaments played.

I liked this from Gil Gross who just tweeted,

The story of Fonseca's first title run isnt big forehands. Its mental toughness, more specifically, resilience

It is true. After the Etcheverry match, his play was erratic, but he always found a way. Quite amazing, really. As I said, just imagine when he gets a year or two of experience and fine-tunes some of his skills. He'll be a total monster. Can't wait to see him play Carlos or Jannik...in fact, it might be good for him to get thrashed by one of them, to see where he needs to get to.

I'm guessing he's going to sneak into--or close to--Tennis Abstract's top 20 Elo rankings. He's at #30 now. He's definitely one of the 20-25 best players on tour right now.

When you consider Fonseca was #655 a year ago? will be Top 70 next week? that does my head in quite frankly,

Well, to be fair, the rankings aren't all that steep until you get to the higher ranks. Or rather, it "speeds up" - as the better players separate themselves further from the pack. But yes, 655 to 70 in a year is quick.

Super class from the kid

I was going to mention that. Nice from him to speak in Spanish in Argentina. Actually I was amazed by the warm welcome he received in BA.

Also to note is how naturally he says that he wants to be world #1 and win majors.

Just an FYI, the ATP site is stating that Fonseca is the 10th youngest title winner in ATP Tour history...they mean since 1990, when the ATP became more formalized. If you extend it to the Open Era, he's 20th or 21st.

Agree, with the rankings scenario, still 655 to 70 in a year is rather quick
