On one hand, this was the worst match from Fonseca in the tournament. On the other, he beat an opponent who was playing well, on a day he wasn't at his best, and still won a big final (for him at least) 3x1, after losing the first set.

I thought Fonseca was nervous especially in the 1st set, though he turned things around, no it wasnt his best match of the tournament, still he found a way to win, which is a mark of a very good player. I enjoyed the match!
Fonseca d Tien 2-4 4-3(8) 4-0 4-2
Fonseca joins Sinner (2019) and Alcaraz (2021) who have won the Next Gen ATP Finals before turning 19.

It was quite the change in momentum after Fonseca won that very tight 2nd set. He was up in the TB, then Tien tied it up, then it went back and forth. But Fonseca pulled it out, in the end, cleaned up his act, and Tien was the one committing more errors. It was a good match, though.

Exactly. Fonseca lost the serve in the very first game, missing routine forehands and failing to close out a point with a doable overhead. But there was merit to Tien as well, keeping the ball deep and hitting some fantastic running forehands.

Fonseca had 6x3 in the tie breaker and missed three straight forehands. Somehow he kept it together and still won, both the tie breaker and the match. Again, his blip in performance is an yellow sign, but the way he kept his head and finished the match playing better than he started is a good thing.

But he can play better than he did, that's for sure.

According to the comments sections of the Brazilian tennis sites, we have a new big three.

Well, that may be jumping the gun, but one can't fault them for optimism. :)

Segure seus cavalos! (not sure if that idiom works in Brazil).

I'm excited about Fonseca and think he's got immense upside -- even to be a member of a new Big Three - but this is just the beginning of the rise and he has to get past various thresholds. I think we can say with some certainty that he's top 20, but whether he's top 10, 5, or #1 remains to be seen. He could max out as a Gasquet type, which is still plenty good.

Oh, my horses are held all right! (By the way even if it is not usual, it works in Portuguese).

People here are talking big things about him for a long time, actually. First time I saw him was in the Us open juniors final against Tien himself. It was obvious he had enormous talent.

But... Brazil had other junior major champions before. Thiago Wild is one, before him there was another Thiago (which is not Monteiro) who was plagued by injuries.

Still, something felt different about this kid. It became kind of a national consensus he would do well, and so far, so good. He is already the third best Brazilian on the rankings.

Notice that if he gets to top 20, he will be already the second best Brazilian of all times in terms of rankings.

Of course, people here are all over the place. My personal take is that he is top 10 material to say the least. One thing that I am liking about him is his attitude. Respectful, centered, but still very competitive. And he believes in himself. On the on court interview, asked if he would believe if someone told him at the beginning of week he would win it all, he basically answered yes.

I really like Fonseca's attitude, too, which bodes well for him, I think. Good head.

Another thing I was thinking about his slow start today was that Mensik match on Friday, which he really had to fight for, so mental and physical, and he IS only 18, so maybe the nerves and a bit of weariness at the start. Plus, in fairness to Tien, he was playing great for 2 sets.

A couple of take-aways/random thoughts/questions from this tournament, though I didn't see but about half of the matches:

* I think they said Fonseca is the lowest-ranked player to win the tournament.

* Fils: @El Dude was wondering before if he didn't want it enough. That would be bad, of course. I wondered if he expected too much without being well-enough prepared for the competition, which would also be bad. In any case, it was rather a poor showing for someone who has been swimming well in the big boy's pool for a while.

* Tien and Mensik were both appealing. Michelson's game less-so, but I can hope for well for him, as an American. Van Asshe was less-than-inspiring to me, what I saw, but I take @MargaretMcAleer's point that he tends to counterpunch and maybe better suited to slower surfaces?

* I guess they don't get any points for this tournament?

* How do people like the format? It certainly moves things along, but I personally hope it doesn't catch on in any significant way.

I like the format for the Next Gen, lets keep it for the end of the year, it does give fans a chance to see the younger players show case their game and for the ATP to promote the Next Gen of players.

Well thats a 'Wrap" for tournaments for 2024!

Not too long to wait for the start of the 2025 season,
The United Cup starts Friday 27th December 1pm eastern Australia Time
Meaning I dont have to be a Zombie anymore and can actually watch tennis on my time line in the day light :)

Nope

Agreed. It is good fun in a tournament like this one, but I would hate it even at a futures event.

ITA! I've already spoken on the subject It'd undermine every record held by Fedalovic, Sampras, Borg, & Lendl as it'd make it easier to match & eventually catch up to them going to this abbrev. format for scoring! M/b they can set up a rival tour using it, but not influencing ATP records! :fearful-face:

Australian Max Purcell, world no 12 in doubles, has elected to enter a voluntary provisional suspension under the Tennis Anti Doping Programme. He has admitted to a breach of Article 2.2 of the TABP relating to the use of a Prohibited Method Suspension, came into effect on 12 December 2024.
During the provisional suspension, Purcell is prohibited from playing in, coaching at, or attending any tennis event authorised or sanctioned by the members of the ITIA or any national association. As the matter is ongoing, the ITIA is unable to offer any further comment until its conclusion.
Max had operations on both feet 8 weeks ago,, he was hobbling at the ATP Finals and pulled out of the DC Finals, whether there's a connection with his treatment and the 'prohibited method' is a question.

If you really want to promote the next gen of players, what the ATP (and WTA) need to do is make the fall tournaments (post-US Open) be open to U21 players only. Use that as a playoff for qualification for the Next Gen finals. This would also give a much needed break to the top ATP/WTA players, who have long expressed concerns of the length of the tennis season.

Yep, agreed. I've got high hopes for him - he has the full package, it seems. Offense, defense, a strong head.

Here's a couple things I saw on reddit:

Well why do a lot of players who expressed concerns the length of the tennis season keep playing exhibitions, and other tournaments after the season is finished lol! both atp players and wta players :)

Tallon Griekspoor has withdrawn from Hong Kong and Adelaide, the 2 tournaments leading up to the AO.

This is the statement from Max Purcell regarding his provisional suspension,
" As announced by the ITIA today, I have voluntarily accepted a provisional suspension since I unknowingly received an IV in fusion of vitimens above the allowable limit of 100ml.Until last week when I received medical records from a clinic showing that the amount of an IV I had received was above the 100ml, I was fully convinced that I had done everything to ensure that I had followed the WADA regulations and methods. But the records show that the IV was over the 100ml limit, even though I told the medical clinic that I was a professional athlete and needed the IV to be below the 100ml. This news was devastating to me because I pride myself on being an athlete who makes sure that everything is WADA safe. I volunteered this information to the ITIA and have been as transparent as possible. I look forward to being back on the court soon.
