Felt like Daniil really lost the battle when Novak was down physically mid 2nd set. Daniil just too passive for the most of the match.
Danii must be very frustrating for his coach. So many hopes after his electrifying, ballsy display in the semi. He followed it with a no-show. And Danii is no kid now. He’s highly experienced. He ought to know better in how to manage himself to be ready to compete..Felt like Daniil really lost the battle when Novak was down physically mid 2nd set. If you are able to watch the 2nd set at least, Daniil did show up. He’s a stubborn guy and yes frustrating I imagine . He admitted himself that what worked against Carlos didn’t work against Novak, but he did not make the adjustments, even under the advice of his coach. There were some outstanding points played and some jaw dropping gets, but it would have been a better match with Carlos there.Danii must be very frustrating for his coach. It’s the difference really between a great player and a good player. Danii is capable of doing great things but he’s not a great player in the real usage of the word ‘great.’ I see he pulled himself together somewhat in the second, but never enough to divert that set from its predictable course. He seems incapable of seeing himself as being good enough at that level against the best. Carlos would definitely have been a better finalist but Danii at least showed purpose and confidence in winning that semi..,If you are able to watch the 2nd set at least, Daniil did show up. Novak Djokovic put on one of his most impressive physical and tactical performances to win a 24th Grand Slam title | Tennis.com
The second set—one hour and 44 minutes long—was one of the most hard-fought in Grand Slam final history.www.tennis.com
Pete would have looked pedestrian with Federer around. Most of his opponents lacked variety.I think no matter what the rankings say, the number one player this year is Djokovic. Carlos might grab it but it won’t be the same, unless he wants to chase Pete’s so far unassailable record. It’s one thing that was impressive every season when Pete finished number 1 was that he was also best in the slams that season too, so there was no discussion.
Connors was YE number one five years in a row but for at least of of those years he was only there because of a ranking anomaly..
How many great players can you list since 1990?It’s the difference really between a great player and a good player. He has failed to rise to the occasion in many situations, including at the US Open in 2019 and at the AO, where he threw away a 2 set lead. Yesterday’s performance is nothing new.Danii must be very frustrating for his coach. So many hopes after his electrifying, ballsy display in the semi. He followed it with a no-show. He rose to the occasion at the USO in 2019. Remember, he was 2 sets down. He was 2 breaks down in thee fifth. It was an epic.He has failed to rise to the occasion in many situations, including at the US Open in 2019 and at the AO, where he threw away a 2 set lead. Yesterday’s performance is nothing new.
Or maybe the opponents were better than him?
We are talking about winning here. He won in 2021, so why didn't he win in other occasions? He rose to the occasion at the USO in 2019. Remember, he was 2 sets down. He was 2 breaks down in thee fifth. It was an epic.
Likewise in Australia last year.
He rose to the occasion in the USO in 2021.
And he didn’t yesterday. He’s capable of much better but his inner world isn’t sharp enough..
We’re not talking about winning. We’re talking about ‘rising to the occasion’, as you put it. A players might rise to the occasion but still lose.We are talking about winning here. So why didn't he win in other occasions?
Back in the day winning one slam was a big achievement. I do agree with you Daniil is very good at what he does, but not a great player. And you are correct that he did not change the final outcome, but he did far better than ‘pull it together somewhat’.It’s the difference really between a great player and a good player. OK, I got it.We’re not talking about winning. We’re talking about ‘rising to the occasion’, as you put it. A players might rise to the occasion but still lose.
A player definitely loses when they don’t rise to the occasion. There’s a difference..
