That's just who he is. A counter puncher who plays the percentages..That's like trying to make Jordan a player who passes the ball and tries to make his teammates better..it's not who he is
IIRC Monfils has always been this way since his salad Junior days.

However at some point it may have been possible to pull a Matts Wilander, ie incorporate some more aggressive tactics into his game. Not an easy adustment grant you, but Matts had been the quintessential counterpuncher also but was willing to adjust for faster surfaces and ended up winning HC and grass Majors.

Only 1 game, Fed has already made 2 UFE. Unlike the first match this time, it is coming on the backhand side that RG is attacking.

Fed has also made the differential +5.

Let us see whether winning the first set loosens him up.

But, he is not able to get into RG's service games much and so I think even though he will win the match, it will be like pulling teeth.

I only started watching with the tiebreak and...wow. Roger looks great. Very heartening.

I don't want to jinx it, but shades of AO 2017...he looks light and quick on his feet and his forehand has some bite. Backhand looks good, too.

Of course whether or not he can tap into this level enough to go deep, is another matter. But it is nice to see that he still has it. This version of Roger can beat anyone here.

Also, Fed has 35 winners to 19 UFE for a differential of +16 compared to RG's +4.
