Thiem just mentioned that one of the goals for this year is to beat Nadal at Roland Garros. That's a lofty goal to have
Other than another rescheduled , I think for Theim the stars seemed to be aligned this year. Should be at his physical peak, at last broke through to win a Major last year, been a finalist at Roland Garos twice. Personally I think he’s surpassed Novak on red clay .

What he again stated SHOULD be his goal. Glad he’s not backing down.

Let's face it, it's everyone's goal in men's tennis. Beyond the Calendar Year Grand Slam, beating Nadal at RG has become the Holy Grail. Good luck to Thiem. Some day it will happen, unless Rafa retires first, but I don't see it happening this spring, if they do, in fact play the FO in 5 months.

Theim has only ever taken one set off Rafa at RG in a final....I can't see how that makes him a special to defeat Rafa at RG in 2021
Lets face it if Sasha did not have a 'mental collapse' he should have defeated Theim in straight sets at the USO in 2020.In my opinion it was not a good quality mens final, the womens final was a better contest all round.

The women's USO was a better tournament all-around, too. Thiem was never convincing in that fortnight. As one commentator put it, it only took for Roger to be out with injury, Rafa not defending due to pandemic and Novak to be DF'd out for Thiem to win a Major. Sorry, but that's true. He still has something to prove.

For me the mark of any player is not only to win a GS title it is if they can defend that title.....lets see if Theim can do that at this year's USO?

Please re read my statement. It should be his stated goal, and things are lined up so that’s the logical progress, as he’s not past his physical peak. Theim should be improving and the next step on red clay Is to best Nadal on red clay. Many may have that as a goal, but realistically it comes down to Theim, for now.

Will it actually happen?
The unknown factor to me is how beneficial in the long run it will be to Nadal to have taken an extended non injury related break from competitive tennis. For all we know it could extend his top level playing career by several years, maybe after the 16th FO title his form inevitably dips.

Better tournament how? Unless you meant the women are better players. The better players make better tournaments, anything else is bla bla bla. Thiem proved he can win a major because he did, if the big 3 ain’t there it’s on them.

I do not have the problem with Thiem's goal. Him saying that means he is very dedicated to become the very best version of himself!

The only thing is that he probably has a higher chance of defeating Nadal on the two HC slams than Roland Garros. He can not hit through Nadal at Roland Garros and he can't play too much defense because Nadal will easily punish him.

Dont take me out on context.I never said women are better players than men to start with.I am not the only one that thought the quality of the mens final was not a 'high quality match' a lot of commentators happen to agree with me that the women's final was a better contested match.Let's see if Theim can defend his title at the USO this year

There is nothing more predictable than @Ricardo showing up if anyone dares to say that the women's game was more interesting than the men's. It's like saying Beetlejuice 3 times. I knew that would call him forth as we typed it. :face-with-tears-of-joy:

I have no problem with that goal, either, and, as a Nadal fan, I will say it's a nod to the man's exceptionalism that he has a target on his back, since 2005. Tsitsipas has also come out as saying that he'd like to beat Rafa on clay...and he actually has, in Madrid. And he didn't even cite RG. @Jelenafan, I'm not arguing the point: they should all have that goal, and they do. Some have more of a chance than others, and Thiem seems to have the best, especially after Djokovic's performance in the recent final. Before that, everyone said Novak was the best chance to dethrone him. 100-2. Just sayin'....

Just watching the first exho match in Adelaide live

Novak has withdrawn in his match against Jannik Sinner due to 'excessive blistering on his right hand' his replacement will be fellow Serbian DC team mate Filip Krajinovic.

He hasn't played tennis is two months and he has a blister on his right hand? (This is where I miss @DarthFed. Though @Front242 might take up the mantle.)

Also thanks for the reminder that there is live tennis. I was wondering what the schedule was.
