zverev couldn’t challenge the 30-30 first serve out call and then served two aces

Four big serves (including a second serve ace) from Zverev to get out of love-30 hold. Now Thiem has to hold serve to stay in the set.

Set point...for Zverev even with a bad approach shot again.

Another set point for Zverev...Thiem is super nervous right now. He is not getting easy points on his own serves!

Thiem saves both set points with a backhand and forehand winner respectively. 5-all in the 3rd set...

Does anyone know why the AO doesn’t play both men’s semis on the same day I find it kind of odd?

I would say it is more important for Zverev to win this 3rd set because he has been the better player in this set especially the last 30 minutes.

No idea, Moxie mentioned this too
Now I can say this again without risk of being accused of self-interest, but I still think it's stupid that the AO continues to schedule 2 women's semis and 1 of the men's on one day, and then 1 men's singles semi on the next. At least this year the two guys playing today are the youngest ones left, but the winner will still have one less day of rest than the other finalist, in this case Djokovic. What would have been the harm in putting off the 1st men's semi for one more day, in order to give them a more level playing field for the final? In fact, it might have benefitted Roger to have the extra day of rest. It's one thing I really disagree with in the AO's scheduling.

I just do not understand on why does Thiem keeps insisting to hit the wide serve on the deuce side. I know Zverev's forehand is the weaker side but he needs to mix it up because he is spending a lot of energy just to hold serve.

It's a stupid tradition that they won't change. It's been brought up several times throughout the years and they won't change it. I think they are trying to keep things fair as to the playing conditions.

If they have both matches on the same day, they would have to start early (since men's matches have the propensity to go longer) and one of the matches would be played in the day while the other would be a night match. Since the final is played at night the early match will have the disadvantage of unlike playing conditions. :thinking-face:

Thiem a perfect time to serve well and Zverev happily obliges by not serving aggressively and being passive on the baseline rallies.

Third set to goes to Thiem 7-3 in the tiebreak.

We will see on how Zverev handles this mentally...

As for Thiem, you want to finish this match now because you do not want to spend extra energy.

I will say if Thiem ever finds consistency on his serve he will be a nightmare for anyone. Right now his serve is too hot and cold for my liking. Fortunately, he has a very good ground game to make up for it.
