... and yet here we are.

That's what's so frustrating! You see it in all the sports; the aging great hanging around taking the NG'rs thunder! Then we see applause for the errors made by Roger's opposition! It begins to get ugly the older some of these stars get and it's just so rotten to see happen again & again!

Sooooooo.... I don't know how I feel about this. Like. Fed looks like he really shouldn't be trying to win this. Like on the one hand, it's sport. You should compete. You shouldn't just give it to the other guy. But. If he doesn't have a great chance of recovering to play the semi against Novak (or Roanic possibly), then should he not allow Sandgren to take it.

I mean. Maybe he doesn't know that he won't be able to play. Maybe he thinks he can. Maybe it's just his DNA to want to see if he can fight to the death and edge out the set. Maybe... whatever drugs he got in the medical timeout finally kicked in and he feels less pain.

Fed taking a break AFTER Sandgren got BACK from a bathroom break. I don't like that. And the umpire being lenient because it's Roger.

Still. Roger on those match points was solid. Lucky several times though. Sandgren just not up to the task in those moments. We'll see if he's got the wherewithal to play like he's been playing and see if Fed can keep up the level that he reached in the fourth. Because he couldn't so much as touch that level for 2 sets.

If he kills himself again to win this match knowing he can't go the next day, I will hate his guts for all time! :nono:

A couple of things... Federer generally does not retire during matches. Secondly, Sandgren has no right to that slot if Federer beats him.

If Sandgren is gonna keep burying shots in the bottom of the net though, that doesn't have much to do with Roger. That's him just going for too much. And you can't fault Roger for that. And Roger will deserve to win then.

Sandgren letting this big screen showing the live action bother him even more than Fed did on this end last service game. And I don't entirely blame him. It's definitely a distraction.

mate what are you whittering on about now. So because he's injured he should let the guy you like pass? This is sports. S P O R T!

I just keep remembering that ugly scene at the YEC's a few years ago! Stan was about to dispatch Fed in the Semi-Final when the wheels fell off with Mirka getting into the act! Everyone knew Roger wouldn't be able to play against Djokovic in the final; or wouldn't knowing his arse was going to get massacred!

You mean that evening he played his heart out and won? Yeah, terrible altogether.

Well. Sandgren just finding out what it's like to have to play the greats. I mean. Maybe Fed still isn't 100% and falters from here. But assuming he holds twice, Sandgren will have to look back on this as one that really got away. But as his first experience against one of the big 3.... he's said he wanted this. And he got it. And you gotta experience that. You gotta learn from it. But it's more than that. It's not just a lesson. You gotta go through the lesson first. You gotta see why Fed has won 20 slams. Why he's never been known for giving away a match.

We likely won't get to understand Fed's resurgence here. He won't put all that out the most likely. But like he did against Millman, he's kept believing. Which. For a while there, I didn't think he did. But he's played himself into some semblance of form. And his meh form is good enough to beat most of the players on tour.

I'm still gonna be really frustrated if he gives his semifinal opponent a walkover though. Needs to go home and sleep and do physical therapy and recover and go out and play that match, even if he knows he's gonna get trounced.

Sandgren at least asking the serve it out question though. Good on him.
