To be honest the level of tennis was below the standards for the final. Best level was in the 5th set. Also as much as Thiem deserves a respect for great fight there is a feel that he is becoming more of a loser in important matches, sort of like Murray.

This was a huge opportunity lost for a maiden slam and I am sure he knows it. Nole won a 2nd slam where he was looking ready to lose it.

Good point. Again I think the GOAT is the three of them regardless of the final total but I know their fans will not just accept it
I absolutely agree and always did. Never used this term for one of them.

Now Thiem only has to lose RG final against Nadal for the 3rd in a row to be just Andy Murray LoL.:face-with-tears-of-joy:

Interesting statement from Thiem in the postmatch interview :

He hopes he wins his maiden slam while the three are still around, because it counts more to beat them.
Poor Domi, if he wins in the future than not against the best versions of them, they already proofed they are above them. Even post-prime and below peak.

A more constant mindset of Nadal in NY and Novak today and the matches would not reach 5th set!

What do mean that it wouldn’t reach 5th set?

Let's be honest here. The reason he won is because Thiem's serve went to dog shit. The only good service game he played since dropping the 4th set predictably was the game he held for 4-5 in set 5.
What about Novak’s serve?
Today it was the weakest serving from him overall. What would be the result when he served like in the rounds before?

I tought the umpire was too hard with those time violations. Okay the first one but the 2nd one was as if he wanted Thiem to win. It took Novak quite a while to get back to normal play again.

Maybe but it shouldn’t bother him that much.

Thiem still has more pourage to eat. Even Novak in the semifinal oncourt press told that biggest difference for the player between the young age and older age is patience. Thiem didn't have it today in the 4th and 5th set and he is not even that young anymore which comes down to IQ too.

Pretty good start into 2020 from Novak:

Beating Anderson, Monfils, Garin, Denis, Daniil, Nadal, Struff , Ito, Nishioka, Diego, Miloš, Roger and Thiem in exactly one month:clap:

Nadal and Novak would have won in 3 or for sets.
I disagree. Thiem showed in 2018 that he could hold his own against Nadal at the US Open, when they played a close match. And he beat him this year at the AO. I don’t see how it could be 3 sets in favor of Nadal. At RG, I agree that Nadal can Thiem him handily, but he is improving.

With Djokovic, the recent final showed that Thiem has made progress because it was a close match.

I put myself in a bubble and watched the encore presentation in ESPN2 which just ended.
It was quite a good match, though not an instant classic.

Congratulations to Novak, Thiem and the Umpire.:clap::clap:

Congrats to Novak on his #8 AO and #17 GS and for going undefeated in finals at AO.

Congrats to Thiem for showing a lot of heart and fighting. He is almost there. He will surely lift the trophy one day.

Congrats to the umpire for fearlessly and consistently enforcing timing violations.

I was talking about Nadal against Daniil in NY, he could have won in straights, became nervous and let him off the hook.
so did. Novak today after the first set. he only played good first half of first, second half of 4th set and 5th set. Not because of thiem s good Play, because of his mindset. Did you watch the match? The third was completely donated to Thiem.
