The Tournament:

The Championships, Wimbledon, commonly known simply as Wimbledon, is the oldest tennis tournament in the world, and is considered by many to be the most prestigious.

It has been held at the All England Club in Wimbledon, London since 1877. It is one of the four Grand Slam tennis tournaments, the others being the Australian Open, the French Open and the US Open. Since the Australian Open shifted to hardcourt in 1988, Wimbledon is the only major still played on grass.

It continues to honour many long-standing traditions, including a strict dress code for competitors, the eating of strawberries and cream, and royal patronage.

WTA legend Martina Navratilova has the ladies tournament record with nine singles titles. She also has the Open Era record with seven doubles titles. On top of that, she has four mixed doubles crowns, giving her a remarkable 20 Wimbledon triumphs altogether. Others who have dominated the event in the Open Era include Steffi Graf with seven singles titles and Serena and Venus Williams, with five each.

The Players:

The big question, with Serena Williams and Maria Sharapova out who will grab their chance to become a member of the AELTC? Be on the lookout for 2 former champs, Venus with 5 titles and Kvitova with 2 titles. Other seeds to watch out for include newly crowned French Open champion and a junior Wimbledon winner Jelena Ostapenko, 2016 U.S. Open finalist Karolina Pliskova, 2 time slam champ and #1 seed Angelique Kerber, hometown favorite Jo Konta, slam champs Muguruza, Azarenka, Kuznetsova and a cast of young guns, mid-level and veteran players all clamoring a chance to hold the Venus Rosewater dish.

Probably the main reason they do not play qualifying rounds at Wimbledon is the cost of keeping the grass at its premium for the tournament,in saying that I love the comparison of 'Upstairs,Downstairs':)

Maybe w/ the current crop of players that is true. But some of the old guard won there and the big W too, like Martina.

Does Kvitova have chance? I would like her to win this one. I hope she is fully match fit.

She has more than a chance. She's a huge contender. She's a former champ and she just won a tune up event.

I normally don't take part in predictions, but I will this time because I think Caroline has a chance this time. There has bin so much improvement to her game that it's just a matter of time before it all give results: Serve has improved - never seen her make 7 aces in one match - one on the second serve, forehand is a weapon now almost as good as her backhand, she's been a bit riskier in her play lately - dropshots and netplay. Her hitting partner has a great deal to say to these improvements - so yes I say Caroline wins as she did in 2006. Go Grassniacki!

Venus has a good draw her big test I feel if she makes the s/finals will be Kvitova, hopefully with this civil suit against her wont affect her play.I have a Venus v Pliskova final.Players to watch.....Ash Barty,Vesnina who was a s/finalist last year,if she can find her game she can be a threat,Radwanska usually plays well on grass, though her game has gone AWOL.,Safarova finally coming into good form after her viral illness.I will be very surprised if Kerber makes the final.Konta can play well on grass though after her bad fall there is a injury cloud over her.

Sorry to dampen your enthusiasm. I strongly feel Caro has no chance of winning Wimbledon. Even though the ship may have sailed for her long ago, it is still possible that she may win a GS. But, it is not going to happen at Wimbledon. Her game is not suitable for grass, IMHO.

Very emotional match and presser for Venus but she comes through in straights. 4 mp's later and Cibby is still out there 7-6 in decider.

A bit nervous about Brengle being in Petra's path.

Bellis v Azarenka will be an interesting test for both.
