RE: 2016 Wimbledon Ladies Final: S. Williams vs. Kerber

While I agree about the second serve, I feel where Serena stumbles is she tries to play to some of her opponents games like she is like I can play your game just as well as you only sometimes she can't. She just hasn't stuck to her game in some of these matches and it cost her. She played more to what Kerber wanted in Australia. She won that second set in Australia by being aggressive and hitting her return and serves.

Kerber is bragging like she is the defending champion...she doesnt have a grasscourt title to speak of.
She did win a warm-up on grass last year I believe. But lots of people win warm-ups and then stumble at the big dance as evidenced by the fact that this is her first Wimby Final.

This is direct result from being tentative. When you're tentative, you're unsure of your game and so you try to play every other way except the way that's paid the bills all this time. It's almost like she needs a "I am Serena warrior, hear me roar" shot in her arm before she takes the court.

Serena needs to break a bunch of rackets before her match to get tension out of her system..

I think that is what I have been waiting for for her to really just let loose and win.

Williams' sisters make the final for Ladies Doubles with a great shot at taking the title.
Wasn't sure whether this deserved its own thread.:D

I have always felt that if I had some "happy tme" with my lady, it relaxes my nerves and tension before a tournament or league match. Maybe it will work for Serena, :clap

Serena has become strangely coy in big matches since she chased history last year, losing slam finals this year that I believe she'd have taken without breaking sweat in 2015. I hope she doesn't become timid. I fancy her to win in two tough straight sets...

In a show called "sports science", ESPN once proved this theory that "happy time" before an event helps in sports. They claim it is true for both genders and also for almost any sport (not sure of mental sports such as chess or bridge).

I've heard quite the opposite Anti, that Pro players aren't allowed 'happy time' of any kind before a big match or tourney.:snicker. Something about sapping energy...but if Sport Science said otherwise then maybe....

Well, this is grass so you'd expect that, with her serve, Serena would win this but she's been pretty bad by her standards in finals the last few slams so I'm thinking Kerber wins this one again but not sure how many sets. Serena is becoming like Roger in big matches and it's no coincidence, same age and been at the top so long, things are bound to go pear shaped at some stage. She goes all passive in finals lately, serves poorly and hits the ball way softer than she does in the earlier rounds. I'm not convinced she'll win this at all but I guess there's a chance she can turn around this final slump too.

I'm hoping their making it to the doubles final gives Serena the extra positive motivation to make it happen in singles. She ended their doubles match with an ace, so more of that against Kerber please.

The match starts 9 EDT. However, ESPN has a hype show starting at 8 EDT. Just a PSA.

A little statistic

And I think Kerber has a fair chance to win today - she actually played quite well in second set aganst Venus and she's not bad either. Kerber in two.

^^ So that's the wall of fame, eh? Only eight times has a player beaten the WS in a tourney, with little Kimmy ruling the roost on twice.

Interesting stats, and I don't know about anyone else but when I first saw Venus play, aged 14, I didn't think she'd still be playing in 2016. In fact, there was a time when I suspected the WS would fade away from tennis in their early twenties, pursuing other things which were more vanity projects than expressions of any real talent. I'm glad they hung around...

If Kerber hadn't won earlier this year, I would say she would have a better chance at an upset. Serena seems alert now and won't take her for granted. Her serve has returned and she'll get a few free points on that. Lastly, I think being so close to losing the #1 ranking has inspired her to play better this tournament. It's almost like she's just now realizing what it will take to stay on top. In the last few years, she could play her B game and still win and I think she got accustomed to that. Serena in 2 tight sets.

The interesting thing about these stats is only 4 players have gone on to win the title. It must take a lot to defeat both of them and still win the title.

Serena just has to focus on the match and not what will happen should she win the match. She needs to focus on each point and game. She needs to play her game, so that the only big points she has to worry about is either serving for the match or breaking for the match. She has to keep the big points and moments to as few as possible, so she doesn't flounder at key stages of the match. Protect your serve and punish hers because hers is punishable as evidence from Halep and Venus. Your sister was a mess and still broke her plenty of times.

Also, she needs to be patient with her strokes don't play 1st strike tennis and AGAIN be mindful of Kerber drop shots because it worked well against Serena at AO.
