I like Big Sam, but I don't think anyone would have picked him to be the guy to stop Novak. TBH, Novak was out of sorts for a lot of the match. If they'd played it out yesterday, I think it would have been over in 3. Rain delays didn't help Djoker's attitude.

Wow, congrats to Sam and commiserations for the Novak fans. This was crazy.

It had to happen sometime. I just did not think it would be Querry in the third round. I actually picked Thiem to win the event this year.

While clearly disappointed, Novak was very gentlemanly in his presser. Even managed a joke. He said he's not playing DC, and he's not sure about the Olympics.

He was gracious, but he did mention injuries. Prompted or not. In the past Fedal have been slated for this. Just saying...

Novak Djokovic now has 4 wins - 21 losses(16%) in best of 5 matches in his career where he has dropped the first two sets.

Of course the 4 he won all went the full 5 sets - Anderson 2015 WC, Seppi 2012 RG, Federer 2011 USO, GGL 2005 WC.

Of the 21 he lost -

1 has been in 5 sets - Murray 2012 USO.

6 have been in 4 sets including this last against Querrey.

14 have been in 3 sets.

In comparison, Rafa has 3 wins -17 losses (15%), Roger has 8-32 (20%), and Andy Murray has 9-34 (21%) in the same situation.

Respectfully,
masterclass

I was on a train today and was just able to update scores every so often, until my dad texted me to tell me what had happened. He said he just sort of looked like he didn't want to be there and that made me really, really sad. Was that accurate?

Hi, @arcticatlantic and welcome to the forum! I don't think that was 100% accurate, except for the 2nd set, yesterday. He came in good and engaged today, whereas Sam had the slower start, and perked up late in the 3rd. In the 4th, Nole missed some 10+ chances to break, and it was frustrating him, clearly. He broke finally for 5-4 and serving for it. He got 2 bad calls and was out of challenges, and Sam broke back. He did seem to have lost focus and drive when Sam got up in the TB. I'd say this match was when the pressure was really showing. Sam played great yesterday. Today he was more like "solid." But with the 2 sets advantage, and Novak still showing stress, it was enough. Taking nothing away from Sam, though, as he didn't whither in the face of the biggest win of his career, and one of the biggest upsets in years.

Beyond the Djokovic upset, the most interesting news on the men's side is the matches to be finished tomorrow. Kyrgios & F. Lopez at one set each, DelPo is down 2 sets to 1 to Pouille, and Tsonga took the 3rd after Isner won the first 2. I'd say any of those matches could go either way.

OK, I looked it up: 28 consecutive QFs or better. (From Wimbledon 2008.) 9 consecutive SFs or better. (Lost QF of AO 2014.) I can't remember Federer's record, but I bet you do.
