Better luck next slam Serena you fought hard. Congrats Mugu! Now follow up and don't cave like the other mental disasters have after winning a slam.

Well Sam's reputation is restored. If you're young and hungry and open to his coaching you'll reach big things. Congratulations to Mugu.

I think Serena is having a year like Federer's first where age started to creep in. She's still strong but doubt is creeping in at the finish line and others are taking advantage. Im a bit heartbroken for her.

The fortunate thing going into Wimbledon for Serena is Muguruza will have equally high expectations as last year's finalist and now a slam winner.

Awesome match, and congratulations to Muguruza.

Some Serena fan is evidently in denial, as this is taken from Garbine's Wikipedia page:

Garbine in two.

Here are top ten reasons.

1. Garbine crushed Serena at RG with a scoreline of 6-2 6-2 (even though it may be 2 years ago and in round 2).

2. Garbine has played against Serena in GS finals. So this is not new occasion and so she will not be overawed (Even the first time, she was not overawed at all and played like big girl, unlike Sabine who was crying during the match. While she lost the match, the score was a respectable 6-4 6-4).

3. Serena will be nervous trying to play Steffi :)

4. Serena apparently has an adductor injury.

5. While this will be Serena's fourth consecutive day of playing, it is only the third for Garbine.

6. Garbine is about 12 years younger than Serena.

7. Serena' s movement does not look good and movement is very important on clay.

8. Serena's usual powerful first serves are MIA in this tourne

9. In the cold, damp conditions, Serena would not be able to hit Garbine off the court.

10. Last but not the least, Serena does not seem to be enjoying her time on court. She does not look happy out there.

p.s. Changed my vote from Garbine in 3 to Garbine 2 as the reasons list kept growing the more I think about it.

Time to gloat. Good call GSM!

Amazing! The ranking points haven't been this close is a while! I'm sorta shocked since Serena's fans have been touting her as the GOAT who can rule for years to come! Time may be running out since more women are playing well! The cakewalks with little play between majors might be over for her! :dodgy:

I don't know that I would say it is over for Serena. One of her favorite slams is just around the corner that won't expose her movement as much. She is making it to the finals of these events still, so the odds have to be in her favor at one of these events. Also, I am happy for Muguruza, but as we know, the ladies have not handled the pressure of expections well at all, so let's see if Muguruza uses this to move on to greater things or self destructs for a while.

She very well might win another major or 2, but playing part time and getting away with it might be over! :nono

For me anyway, the intensity is lacking in Serena. There is a big difference in her demeanor this year and last year. Last year, she was fighting for everything and was quite vocal and animated about it. This year, she is fighting, but not really in a manner that says she cares about he result.

At her age, screaming like a banshee after winning a point doesn't always "do it!" :nono  :dodgy:

Congratulations to Gabine. She was the better player today. Commies to Serena, hopefully #22 is just a few weeks away!

I thought Serena not playing a lot of tournaments this year was more in line with her being in self preservation mode with her body. She does need to get her forehand in order. I can understand the backhand today if she was injured, but her forehand has caused her many unnecessary errors this year.

Mugu now ranked number two, 1600 points behind Serena.

Although I did not expect her to win here, I am still disappointed.
