2015 Wimbledon R16 - S. Williams vs. V. Williams

Normally, the admins start special threads for individual matches only from QF onwards. But, this one is so special that it deserves its own thread as it pits two five-time Wimbledon Singles Champion who together also have five Wimbledon Doubles Trophies. These two have not met in any GS at any stage since 2009 Wimbledon final, which was won by Serena; that is a long time. The head to head is 14-11 in favor of Serena, 7-5 in grandslam matches in favor of Serena and 3-2 in favor of Serena on grass. But, their most recent meeting, last summer in Montreal was won by Venus.

Venus has not lost a single set so far and she is looking good with respect to her form. Serena is definitely not playing as well as she can, partly due to pacing herself and partly due to the pressure of Serena Slam. Other girls of WTA might fold like a cheap tent against Serena when it comes to crunch time, but I guess Venus won't. If someone can capitalize on Serena's nervousness it will be Venus.

Even though the autoimmune disease might sap the energy, I am expecting it to not play a role here. The two days rest should especially help Venus.

Here is a preview from tennis.com

This is going to be a tough match for Serena. Venus is playing really really well, she is on her favorite surface and Serena has a whole lot more pressure. Venus could take the first set and it will depend on Serena getting it together from the second. Once she has the second, she should win the third easily. Venus will have to win this in straight sets but I don't think Serena will let that happen. Serena in three.

I think the person who wins the first set is winning this match. I picked Serena in three. However, Serena can not start out slow against Venus or have any lapses because she is one of the few players who will capitalize.

Like I said I would prefer Serena to win this match and not Venus. If Venus win this match there's no guaranteed she will win the title (no guaranteed for Serena either) or the next match for that matter. However, Serena has a better chance of getting to the final and winning the entire thing than Venus. Now, if Venus did not have that illness I would not care who win this match because I know either one would have a chance of making it to the final and winning.

She lost to Venus in Montreal last year, and it isn't like Serena played a bad match. However, I agree that Serena is more likely to go the distance than Venus.

Let us assume your contention that if Serena wins this match she is highly likely to win the title and even if Venus wins the title she is highly unlikely to win the title. Even under such assumptions, who wins the title here is not relevant. Venus should play and will play to win this match.

The last Serena Slam was achieved at the expense of Venus as Serena defeated Venus in the finals of all of those majors. Now, I think Venus will stop her in quick two sets without giving Serena the opportunity to engage in drama.

In the all-important category of non-final GS matches Venus leads Serena by 3-1. :p

A lot has changed since they last met in a non-slam final, and correct me if I'm wrong, but, Serena won the last non-slam final, and it wasn't like Venus was not at the top of game in that match.

I think Serena will take this, but it will be a bumpy ride. The irony is that Serena had to beat Venus in every slam final to complete the Serena Slam the first time, and Venus has the ability to potentially foil another Serena Slam. Adrenaline and motivation is a scary thing in Serena, and she has it spades over everyone in the WTA.

I was not talking about non-slam finals; I was talking about non-final slam matches.

I was looking at it as this is a non-final slam match.

In case you are wondering, that is not really an important stat. That is why I put an emoticon at the end of my message.

But, I am sticking with my pick.

Venus is on the upswing for the last two years and rising up in the rankings. She is not ranked in the top 16 for almost four years now and she is back there now. Even then she is not good enough to beat Serena game wise. But, throw in the three factors, I say V will be the Victor.

1. Serena is palpably nervous and V can capitalize on it.
2. Grass is V's favorite surface.
3. The two day rest will be a boon to V giving her more energy, considering her condition.

I think Venus will win. Seems weird, almost like Serena's resigned herself to losing the way she's going on a Venus worship in comments this past few days.

I said Serena has a better chance of getting to the final. Yes it is relevant who wins this match tomorrow. I have to look ahead because this match tomorrow is forcing me to do that. Venus is inconsistent and not dependable. As much as I love both these girls, my alliance right now lies with Serena.

I don't think Serena is going down in straights. She has fought tooth and nail at every slam, so Venus if she is to win will have to do it in three. Tough task: taking out a motivated Serena. Nerves will be a factor for both players. I don't think Serena is thinking about history but rather she just wants to win Wimbledon again. Like I said in another thread. Serena has struggled in the rounds this year where she bombed last year Friedsam in the 2nd at the FO and now Watson at W. Hopefully now that she has exceeded where she faltered last year, she will calm down.

Agree, Serena will take this one. When Serena get on the tennis court the tennis devil possesses her and she does not care who is across the net from her she goes for the win.

She has always showered her sister adulations that's nothing new.

True but she also plays like a muppet against her these days almost as if she feels compelled to let her win, which is dense. And for that reason I don't think it's a given Serena wins. Far from it.
