Pennetta just announced her retirement.

Wonder if she'll play the rest of the season. Maybe she just meant she won't be back in the US Open. Hope she plays the rest of the year anyway. Doing a Bartoli then.

Ah ok, missed that. Thought she meant her last match there. Shame but good way to go out. Just seems a bit abrupt. First time ranked as high as 8 also.

I will be salty if I want. I am just as mad at Serena as I am Vinci. I had planned on seeing the final, but switched over to the men's final after that loss.

Of course you can. I am just happy to see a new face lifting a trophy.

You should blame Serena, because she played bad.

What did you expect on a Serena fansite disguised as a tennis site? The majority here have tried to exuse Serena's loss afterward with all kinda nonsens exuses - Sept 11 being the most morronic - They sang a whole diffent song before the match - The most significant was that Roberta would not even take a set - Few have given Roberta the credit she deserves. - Note also that Flavia had a day to rest and Roberts hardly had the time to process her stellar victory - I also wanna add that nothing was wrong with the interest for this final as some die hard Serena fans have suggested - As far I could see the stadium was filled - Maybe this final was not very entertaining but few finals treat us with beautiful and exciting tennis - Unfortunatly for the majority of the posters here a final is not worth watching if Serena is not one of the players

OK, now their saying this wasn't exactly her last match. She implied but didn't mean that apparently. Hopefully she'll hang around until the WTA Championships.

Both Vinci and Pennetta played the match of their life in the semis. You can't play the match of your life two days in a row. And indeed - as the one to deny Serena the grand slam Vinci didn't have the time to get back down from cloud nine and quietly prepare for the next one. It must have been a hectic 24 hours for her. But Pennetta was as the more accomplished singles player of the two always going to be the slight favorite. Not that this means much in womens tennis these day where a day without a surprise is a surprise.

The stadium was indeed filled......but with people who thought they were going to see Serena vs Halep, Azarenka or Kvitova when they bought their tickets. The reason why Serena lost to Vinci was a combination of the pressure getting to Serena and Vinci playing the match of her life. Bitter comments from fans? Who cares? Comments can't change results.

Anyway - congrats Flavia. That's a magnificent way to leave the game. :clap

WOW Retirement? WOW. It's pretty shocking but I get it. This is kind of a similar story to Bartoli and Li Na. Both those players had been wildly inconsistent but consistent draw spoilers. Their rankings would rise up to the top 10 and then fall back down to the 20s where they would just be really difficult opponents for top 5/10 players before R16. If you're 33 and you've just won your first grand slam it's like reaching the finish line. Wow what a fascinating way to end a career literally this day. Well, it's not the drama we all hoped for in the end but it's drama none the less.

The tennis experts in ESPN studio loved it. Evert and Shriver for example. This was tennis not just boom boom. And luckily New Yorkers were also interested, filled the arena and at times, the atmosphere was electric. Especially the second set stood out.
