This is such a great title to win. Truly exceptional start of the year.

Think it would be good to skip Madrid now and get ready for the big task: Roland Garros.

They should make Madrid optional for a player who chooses to compete in Monte Carlo. But then, no one would show up for Madrid.

An easier way to deal with the situation is to say that they will count the best 8 of the 9 masters for players for ranking purposes and nothing is mandatory.

Problem there is that some masters events (Madrid, Paris) will suffer more than other masters events.

Why do you think that players would rather to play in Monte Carlo than Madrid?

Because Madrid is not a true clay court, but clay surface over concrete. Clay Masters Series events are meant to be a warm up for the French Open, and the courts should be somewhat representative of the way it will play there.

I started watching the match today only after the rain break. I thought it was a mid-match walk about by Novak. That just was not the case. Novak was playing bad right from the beginning.

If Novak has this much trouble focusing in the semifinal match after winning the final, It is
possible that Roger may lift the trophy at RG (as the final followed by semifinal can happen
again at RG).

Funny, I've always thought they happened in the reverse. ;)

He meant to say if Rafa and Novak play the real final in the semis, old Wodge might have half a chance to steal another RG crown. :snicker

interesting fact:
Masters titles since 2011
Djokovic = 18
Federer + Nadal + Murray = 18

Just woke up on a rainy Monday morning to see Berdych actually made a match of it but still lost. Same song, next verse. But I feel that he is gradually getting better. I feel a bad early round loss coming up before he makes a charge through the FO draw and then who knows.

Djokovic is simply amazing. Anything less than a French Open Championship will be a disappointment for him.

just been watching the highlights. I can't put my finger on what Tomas is doing differently, but golly he looks capable. And he actually had some fight which was great to see. I would love it if he could win a slam. It burns me that Cilic has one but he doesn't

The pressure is going to be insanely high.

That's been the case since the beginning! From years ago, he was a solid #3 who rarely lost to unheralded players and was his own worst enemy when he was favored to win a title! He may not acquire the record # of majors or have a great run of wins at 1 of the top 2; Wimbledon & USO! Federer has the major title record along with 2 huge runs at those majors that can't be surpassed by a current rival like Nadal! Rafa owns the FO like no other player since Borg; taking on all comers where most top players skipped this clay major to participate in WTT and WCT events in past eras; supposedly kept Connors from completing calendar year Slam in '74! Nole has a lot going for him; playing well within himself, grounded with a family, has a great team, and seems to be the fittest he could ever be! He doesn't have to win much else for the rest of the season just to hold onto #1 ranking, but he looks to be carving out a better season than he had in 2011! :popcorn  :dodgy:

Side question: is Novak already allowed to skip masters events on the basis of his resume?

could be slightly wrong, corrections by online boffins are acceptable..but criteria for 'skipping' masters are..

1....600 atp singles wins.

or 2)...zyx years of playing more than 20or 30matches per year.

or 3)...age 31yrs old.

and IF this info is wrong then blame uncle toni.

I haven't read the other poasts yet..i couldn't view the final but skeletor at least took it to three sets, so at least djokovic had to work for it but with a major and 3 masters already it looks like he has claimed the ye no1 rank already.

I think you still have to say that Djokovic has Nadal in front of him at the French. Rafa has proven before that, no matter what comes in best 2 of 3, he's a tough out in 3 of 5 on clay. (He's only ever lost one.) And it certainly is not the case since Nole's beginning that he only had his nerves and the pressure to face. Nadal and Federer have been formidable opponents. Djokovic is on an incredible roll, and no one can match him, at the moment, but let's not rewrite history.

Fiero should be banned for another six months. :cover After the match is over, he has voted for Novak in three. :nono As pointed by Denisovich, at the point of time Novak lost the second set, there were no votes for Novak in three. Admins should close the pool once the match starts.

Incredibly puny. Polls are for fun. And don't make the Admins & Mods work harder than they already do. :nono
