Does anyone remember an event where there were no semifinals?

Definitely not. This is awful for the fans.

I can't remember a tournament when even one semifinal was cancelled, nevertheless both.

By the way does anyone know if the fans get their money back or not with tickets to the day/night session?

This is their official policy (taken from their website) after Nishikori withdrew, which is why there are specifics about session number, date, time, etc.:

"The following ticket exchange policy applies to guests who have purchased individual session tickets for Session 21 (Friday, March 28th @ 1pm) that were purchased directly (and not via ticket auction, exchange, resale or other secondary ticket outlet) through IMG Tickets, SonyOpenTennis.com or in person at the Crandon Park Tennis Center Box Office. Ticket holders who purchased tickets for Session 21 may exchange their tickets for Sessions 3-21 of the 2015 Sony Open, which will take place March 23- April 5. Please note that this policy does not apply to weeklong subscription packages in the 100 level (Box), 200 level (Suite) or 300 level (Series) or any tickets issued on a Complimentary or Trade basis. The Sony Open cannot guarantee ticket availability, exchange of equal value or comparable seat location. All ticket exchanges are final, and there will be NO REFUNDS OR CREDITS."

If they hold onto that without being able to put on the men's semis, then it'll be pretty disgraceful.

This is what the tournament's site just posted:

"Tomas Berdych has been forced to withdraw from the 2014 Sony Open Tennis due to gastroenteritis and will be unable to play in tonight’s semifinal match versus Rafael Nadal.

The women’s doubles semifinal between Raquel Kops-Jones/Abigail Spears and Ekaterina Makarova/Elena Vesnina has been moved to 7:30 pm on Stadium Court.

Berdych, a 2010 Sony Open finalist and this year’s No. 7 seed, was looking to capture his first Sony Open title. With the withdrawal Nadal advances to the Sony Open final for the fourth time. Nadal has previously reached the final in 2005 (vs. Roger Federer), 2008 (vs. Nikolay Davydenko), and 2011 (vs. Djokovic).

This weekend’s finals will both feature match-ups of the No. 1 and No. 2 ranked players in the world. Saturday’s women’s final at 1 pm will see No. 1 Serena Williams taking on No. 2 Li Na. The men’s final at 2:30 pm on Sunday will see No. 1 Nadal battling No. 2 Djokovic.

The following policy applies to guests who have purchase individual session tickets for Session 22 (Friday, March 28th) that were purchased directly (and not via ticket auction, exchange, resale or other secondary ticket outlet) through IMG Tickets, sonyopentennis.com or in person at the Crandon Park Tennis Center Box Office. Ticket holders who purchased tickets for Session 22 may exchange their tickets for Sessions 3-20 and 22 of the 2015 Sony Open, which will take place March 23-April 5, 2015.

All ticket exchanges are final, and there will be NO REFUNDS OR CREDITS. In order to take advantage of this exchange, the original ticket purchaser must complete the 2014 Ticket Exchange Form and mail the original tickets for Session 22 to the Box Office. The Ticket Exchange Form is available online at www.SonyOpenTennis.com.

All ticket exchange request forms and Session 22 tickets must be received by April 30, 2014 in order to be eligible. Any requests received after that date will not be honored. Please keep a copy of your tickets for your personal records. If you have further questions about the Ticket Exchange Policy, please call 305-442-3367 or e-mail tickets@img.com.

Hospitality and suite entertaining will continue as planned."

Wow! I was just tucking in for the Rafa-Berdy match and I see this. Unbelievable. Well, we get the final we want, and both guys have the same amount of rest/lack of a SF match. Did A-P have tickets for tonight?

I was upset when I heard that Nole got a WO and then I turned the TV on to watch Rafa and learned about the Double Walk Over! I don't remember both players just "walking" into a Final before

Probably hasn't happened since the ancient amateur days, when semi-finalists had to withdraw due to hangover. :laydownlaughing

Oh, well. We could all just stay on and argue the various merits/crimes of Federer, Nadal and Djokovic. Today is, after all, the 10-year anniversary of the maiden Fedal match.

Yeah, it's a disastrous day, tennis wise. I always think of the fans. I've gone to the US Open, and travelled far to get there, and you're at the mercy of things. A pity for Tomas...and the fans.

Don't be too sensitive.

It would be even more funny if both of them give a walkover, unaware that the
other did so, by informing a different officials and the winner gets decided by the
exact timing of the two walkover announcements.

Yes and no. He had a bad dose of puking and the squits so I wouldn't like to have seen what would happen when he started his service motion :gross:

That is such a bummer, A-P! Do you already have tickets to the final? I hope it's a good match…probably will be. I had a rain-out last Sept. at the USO. Saw about 2 games of tennis, ate over-priced food, drank a couple beers, all drenched with rain, and then went home. But you're right to be philosophical…what can you do? Anyway, I hope you get the final you well-deserve! :clap

Tomas Berdych fans are not happy about proceedings. His mother has had to re-arrange her evening and will now be watching a Downton Abbey re-run. The other, a 57 year old unemployed painter & decorator from Wyoming is now meeting up with friends for a bonsai tree pruning tutorial.
