She’s Christian Orthodox, like the majority of Romanians. For Orthodox Christians is something normal to make the sign of the cross, it's her unspoken prayer of thanks to God. The Sign of the Cross is a prayer itself. In Romania you’ll see people making the sing of the cross when passing an orthodox church (even if they are in a bus), you’ll see sportsmen making the sign on the pitch, it's not perceive as something unusual ,at contrary, is their way of being.
