I can't change anything that happens in the world of tennis. Doesn't mean I won't talk about it. I don't think Nadal's reputation is affected either, and I don't think it makes Stan's achievement less impressive, or the level he displayed any less amazing.

Up to set 2 2-0 it was amazing anyway (apart from serving). Not sure about the rest being amazing though. I was pi$$ing myself laughing and disgusted at the same time with how he played from the point Nadal got injured.

Re: medical time outs: Would everyone have really preferred if Nadal had retired at 6-3 2-0? How much would Wawrinka's win been anti-climactic then? I notice a lot of "black or white" arguments around here regarding medical time outs, time violations, etc... Things really aren't as cut and dry.

MTOs should be allowed IMO for the reason above. These guys are putting a show on for people who have bought tickets, TV packages etc... If an MTO prevents a retirement then they should be allowed despite the fact they get abused from time to time.

Plus, I have no idea how much the tickets cost but they can't be cheap. The same fans that booed Nadal when he initially called a medical time out where the same fans that erupted when Wawrinka converted match-point, and gave Nadal a standing ovation for his effort. If a medical time-out allows a 4 set final instead of one that barely goes over a set, then I'm all for it.

Yeah, it will get abused, but that's just a con we will have to deal with.

I'll take it a step further... what if Nadal had somehow recovered and won the match because he was able to take a medical TO. A medical time out can be a difference between winning a slam (and a lot of money), and second place (and disappointment). It's a difference between "Game, set and match Wawrinka" and having to politely inform the crowd that "Mr. Nadal is retiring."

Plus, in the grand scheme of things, with the hundreds of tennis matches that take place during a year, how many feature bogus medical time outs? It can't be a significant percentage.

I was being overly generous with praise. Play along Front :laydownlaughing

No but seriously, Stan was incredible until the injury.

All MTO's should be strictly courtside and toilet breaks should be banned altogether.

I agree about toilet breaks, but in fairness, they all need them at some point, but for some MTO's, clothes need to be adjusted and it's not fit for public consumption. In that case, going off-court is only proper...

Taking a leak should be banned (nobody playing tennis ever needs to take one). For No. 2 tasks, the WC should be wired up to the stadium loudspeakers, so the fans can be re-assured it's not being abused.

:lolz::lolz::lolz::lolz::lolz::lolz::lolz:

Azarenka's toilet breaks would be something...

Excuse me if you felt 'reprimanded.' It was my opinion. You so carefully guard yours, but I do get mine.

Your opinion about the match is your own and I respect it. Your opinion about how I "should" act, for merely pointing out the obvious, is a different issue. One mommy is enough for me, thanks.

Wow…that stiff wind of condescension almost blew my mommy hat off. I forgot you weren't to be disagreed with.

Nope, I'm disagreed with all the time. I'd be pretty bored if I'm only ever agreed with, in fact. I just don't like to be morally scolded for expressing disappointment in someone's injury without absolutely showering the winner with unequivocal praise.

I wasn't morally scolding you, nor trying to shower Wawrinka with praise. I was trying to make the point that loss sometimes needs to be chalked up, and a bad day is a bad day. I'll leave the mopping up to you, then, when folks accuse Rafa fans of making excuses for loses due to injury. It was bad luck for Rafa that his back bothered him today. It was also bad luck for him that Stan played as well as he did. I'm not sure what else there is to say.

Again I wake up to Rafa losing a match "only due to injury;" or so people will say! No other top player nauseates me more for this very reason! No one can win unless Rafa isn't feeling well and at his best! Does his opponent get the same consideration? NO! Most would say, "you were going to lose anyway!" Sickening! Wawrinka was playing out of his mind "from the jump!" Why couldn't he have won anyway? "Bravo Stanley; you backed up that great win of Nole and took this title!" This should happen more often! :clap :clap :clap

Congrats to Stan. Idk how he played I woke up just now. He must have played fairly well and according to 65 pages of medical timeout arguments and what ifs I guess rafa might have played with some injuries. Still Stan got it done. Hope rafa gets better.

@Broken: :( See what I was trying to avoid?

@Fiero: Speaking of being nauseated by someone, you didn't even read the post you were quoting. (Never met a nuance you didn't tread on, I guess.) And: are you really so vile that you drop straight into hilarity when you read that a player might have been injured?

Fiero425, I'll be the first to admit I've seen my share of MTOs by Nadal when there looked to be nothing wrong and even thought maybe it was tactical today to break Stan's rhythm but seriously, today he clearly was not ok after 2-0 2nd set. Up till then he was fine.

There you go assuming a lot! I just don't like it when the only thing we will hear now is Rafa only lost because he's injured! There's no jocularity involved, just satisfaction someone outside the top 4 won a major; PERIOD! Get over yourself; you and the rest of the Rafa sycophants!

Cool! At least we know where we stand unlike some others that will be assuming I enjoyed him breaking down! The fact is, I've been saying for years this was inevitable with the way he plays! It's much too physical a game of attrition, and his body had to break down sooner or later! Just happening a lot sooner than most thought!
