The way Serena is playing, it's hard to see Vika winning this. Although of the entire field, it's probably the best final we could hope for.

Prediction: Serena in straight sets.

Interesting, this the second slam that Serena has made the finals of three years in a row, (Wimby 2002-2004), but, it's kind of working in the reverse manner

Well, she won Wimby in 2002 and 2003 beating the same player, Venus, an English speaker and unexpectedly lost to a blonde Russian in 2004. Now, at the US Open she unexpectedly lost in 2011 Stosur, an English speaker, and has since beaten a blonde Belarussian in 2012 and is facing her again in 2013.

I know I'm reaching, just food for thought.

Before the matches today, I would have voted for three...but Vika's game isn't clicking half as much as it was clicking in Cincy. so I'm going for Serena in two.

I havent been impressed with Vika and her serve at all in this tournament. After seeing her performance
against Flavia today....it continues. She maybe a one of the best returners in the game and is strong off
the ground off both wings...still that wont cut it against Serena.
Serena has this title on her racquet.
Serena in straight sets.

The only thing that can stop Serena at this point is a couple of foot-fault calls, the beating up of the person that called them and the inevitable ejection from the match...Serena in straights.

A couple of years ago Serena lost badly to Samantha!

Can it happen?

Kiu, anything is possible, plus Vika knows how to beat Serena. But knowing it and implementing it are not the same. Serena seems to be playing with amazing focus these days.

Serena is playing much better than she was in Cincy. Vika actually is playing on the same level as that Jankovic match in Cincy. I am not saying Vika can't improve from here, but the only thing I can see happening to Serena is nerves at being so close to finally defending a US Open title. If it is windy, everything will tip in Serena's favor as Serena is the better wind player.

There are some differences, first off, there is a day off between the finals and semi's, no late nights for Serena.

Second, Serena is in the fittest shape of her career.

Third, both players have something to lose as oppose to Stosur having nothing to lose.

But, Vika winning is more than possible.

“I know her game as well as she knows mine,” Williams said. “She knows what I do great, what I do bad, and what I can do better. I know the same thing. At this point, it's just all about just playing some tennis now."

I don't think we can really predict how Vika will play until the match begins. She kind of has developed this way of playing slams where she plays pretty crap matches until the final or SF. I still think Serena will win but I am hoping for Vika.

I don't expect Vika to play the way she played this entire tournament. She's got a good ability to up the level when she's in a final.

I still expect a Serena that beat Li 6-0 6-3 to be able to easily win her 17th.

I totally agree with your last statement! It's so interesting to see that certain players literally CANNOT deal with wind and others can. Serena seems to be able to adjust well. Vika can eventually find her range in the wind but its tough for her. Maria on the other hand can almost always be predicted to lose in the wind if her opponent is even halfway decent. In the wind her game disappears.

I think where Serena can sometimes take time to adjust is her ground game when it comes to the wind, but she usually is always on point with adjusting her serve and return with the wind.

Also, Serena is at that point in her career where she is making every match count even when she loses. Nobody has beaten Serena in straights this year, so they have had to work extra hard for that win against her. I expect Serena to come out with laser focus and protect that serve at all costs. This is where you will see her ramp up the mph on her serve. We have seen flashes of it here and there as she has rarely needed to go there this tournament, but she has been saving those higher mph serves for this match especially since this is the last slam of the year, so she can't afford to not go for it if she wants the hardware.

I concur. The one thing I have noticed is that no matter how poorly Vika is playing, when it comes to a final, she usually elevates her game. The mistakes diminish and the returns are sometimes unbelievable.

Like this: I'm confident in my prediction that Serena will beat Sharapova.

I would confidently predict that before every one of their matches.
