Number 8 for Rafa. Amazing. Congrats. There is not really much that can be said about today's match, but still he had to go out and play and get it. His level was amazing at times.

A word for David. Well deserved final. Maybe a bit late , but better late than never, just like his first Masters 1000 was. It is weird he will be jumping past Nadal after a loss to him but that is the way the cookie crumbles sometimes.

Rafa has won the last 8 clay meetings. The 2013 Madrid and Rome Quarters were 3 sets while the final in Acapulco was straight sets.

Rafa had won the last 16 clay meetings. And now 17. Congrats to Rafa on his eighth French Open. Although the final was a bit of a dud, what he has accomplished is amazing.

Congrats, Rafa! That was quite a tournament, beginning with shaky opening rounds, through an epic semifinal, and now the final.

Congrats also to Ferrer for such a great tournament, and making his first GS final.

If he overtakes Fed, he might as well be better than Fed ;)

He won't overtake Fed UNLESS he wins a couple of slams outside of clay. He can of course do just that but he needs to be healthy and play his best tennis. At least on grass; I feel if he can manage the first week then he is the favorite to win the whole thing.

Anyways, no need to worry since Rafa has an habit of injuries and overplaying. At least he is skipping Halle.

So, no he won't get to 17. Too late for that but 15 sounds good only IF (see above)

As a Fed fan, I would be happy to see him more slams and least be bothered whether Nadal or somebody else breaks it. Today, I tuned in just to watch Nadal lift the trophy. That was the moment to watch and not to be missed wheter or not I am his fan. What an achievement :)

Nadal is by far the true king of clay. I doubt anyone can even argue against it. For his part, all Federer needs is an 8th Wimbledon and he can be the undisputed king of grass. The way he's been playing though....

Sadly, on a different note, the final was a bit of a dud. I could only watch a few minutes. It was like watching female tennis.

Rafa does have a very good chance at 18+ I've always said Roger left too many slams on the table and it might yet come back to bite him.

In my mind he needs 8 or Pete should be considered the king of grass as he was 7 for 7 in finals. Roger has this year and next year maybe to try to get 8

petros was 7 in 7 finals because he wasn't good enough to reach an 8th final or more.

.anyhow Federer has more grass court titles than petros..

so fed over petros it is..

vamos to mr eightinninefrenchopens btw :clap..a world record..ooh yeah.

but world rank goes down to no5 for Wimbledon though. :snigger

It's the age old argument. Yes Pete didn't get to 8 finals but every time he got to the biggest stage in the sport he stepped up and won. Roger failed to do that in 2008.

at least roger reached the final again..unlike pete who failed to reach more finals.

Well, I crunched the numbers for Sampras and Federer and I came up with the following (based on the current slam point ranking system):

Career points at Wimbledon:
Sampras = 15370
Federer = 16310

One interesting note is that to this point they both played 14 Wimbledons so its a pretty good comparison.

I was thinking about doing this for the FO but then figured it doesn't even matter with Nadal.

i dont think you can say hes the favorite. i believe djoker can def challenge him hard if not win against him on grass and hard courts.

Nadal isn't catching Federer. Anybody here remember 2009? Roger certainly does. Anyone remember that Ralph missed seven months of the last year? He's missed a whole year in total since 2005. You can't skip so much and set records like that. Others gain and you lose ground. Everyone knows Nadal, he's limited in his expectations, and may even have a shorter career than any others of the Top 3 (+1).

And wasn't the final as anti-climactic as expected? Every little suspense was exactly that - a little one, a small nick, a tiny draw of blood to delay the inevitable. The great match was the semi and kudos to No1e for making it so. I didn't think he'd make it to five and he was huge. It was a truly great match, if we measure these things by the way a match escalates towards an unguessable conclusion. At times in the fifth, the semi reminded me of W2008, just in that regard: you never knew who would blink first...
