Oh, and Roger and Rafa both had 44 PEP in 2017, but adjusted for W% it is 54 and 52.

^ How does Borg get 1975? I don't see that at all. I can see 1978, but I did forget about Vilas in 1977. That was some year, especially on clay. Connors to me gets 1982 without question, but I do place a lot of emphasis on majors.

Well, it is very close but Connors dipped quite a bit from 1974 and didn't wi anything above an ATP 250 equivalent, though he did win 9 of them, plus appeared in three Slam finals. But Borg had a better overall resume that year with 7 titles, but including a Slam and Masters.

CONNORS (26 PEP)
Slams: 3 F (3 x 5 = 15 pts)
TF: na
Masters: 1 final (2 pts)
ATP 500: na
ATP 250: 9 titles (9 pts)

BORG (29 PEP)
Slams: 1 W, 1 SF, 1 QF (10 + 3 + 1 = 14 pts)
TF: 2 Finals with 5 match wins (5 pts)
Masters: 1 W, 2 SF (4 pts)
ATP 500: 1 W (2 pts)
ATP 250: 2 W (2 pts)
Davis: 2 wins in finals (2 pts)

But actually, it was Arthur Ashe who had the highest PEP total that year:

ASHE (31 PEP)
Slams: 1 W (10 pts)
TF: WCT W (4 pts), Masters F (3 pts)
Masters: 1 F, 2 SF (4 pts)
ATP 500: 2 W, 2 F (6 pts)
ATP 250: 4 W (4 pts)

PEP RANKINGS for 1975
1. Ashe 31
2. Borg 29
3t. Connors, Vilas 26
5. Orantes 22
6. Nastase 15
7t. Tanner, Alexander, Panatta 10

Oh, and the breakdown for 1982:

Connors (40 PEP)
Slams: 2 W, 1 WF (21 pts)
TF: 1 win (1 pt)
Masters: 1 W, 1 F, 2 SF (8 pts)
500: 2 W, 2 F (6 pts)
250: 2 W (2 pts)
Slam bonus: +1 for two surfaces: +1 for two Slams (2 pts)

McEnroe (31 PEP)
Slams: 1 F, 1 SF (8 pts)
TF: 2 finals, 4 wins (4 pts)
Masters: 1 W, 1 F, 3 SF (9 pts)
500: 3 W, 1 F (7 pts)
250: 1 W (1 pt)
Davis: 2 w (2 pts)

Lendl (43 PEP)
Slams: 1 F (5 pts)
TF: 2 W, 6 wins (8 pts)
Masters: 3 W, 2 F (16 pts)
500: 3 W, 1 F (7 pts)
250: 7 W (7 pts)

Lendl had an incredible year, just minus a Slam win. But he won both both tour finals (Masters Cup, WCT), 3 Grand Prix Masters, 3 ATP 500 equivalents, and 7 ATP 250 equivalents...15 titles overall, as many as Connors (7) and McEnroe (8) combined. Connors was excellent and won two Slams, but relatively light otherwise.

Anyhow, either way, McEnroe was third best that year.

1982 PEP RANKINGs
1. Lendl 43
2. Connors 40
3. McEnroe 31
4. Vilas 19
5. Wilander 15
6. Kriek 14
7t. Gerulaitis, Clerc 11
9. Noah 10

Connors making 3 major finals in 1975 is still a great year where it counts. But I can see putting Ashe over him since he beat him in the big one in London. I know Borg won the French for the second time that year, but it was #3 in importance amongst the majors back then. Ironically, it was the Swede who elevated that major back to where it ought to be by not only winning it six times in eight year, but winning SW19 five straight years as well with three straight what we call now "chunnel" slams.

1982? I don't care about Ivan the Terrible winning the combined amount of events as the other two greats--it was Connors' year all the way, although brother Kieran will likely say that was because Borg was already dialing it in! :)

I see that you are a Slam Absolutist ;). We'll just have to agree to disagree. But not also that Lendl won both tour finals that year - defeating Connors in the SF of one and Mac in the finals of both.

I have no problem giving Connors the crown in '82, but clearly Mac was the third best player that year.
