Color Me Dead.............Tom Perrotta just said on Twitter Coco could be the next Steffi Graf????????????????????????????
I knew this would happen................get a grip Media............Honestly.....I need a Bex,Water and a good lie down.
Cancel that a double scotch on the rocks and it is just 8.am here in Sydney.
I think Perrotta is looking at Gauff from the perspective of hearing about her for years. This is a girl who was picked up by Fed's agent at 13. She seems incredibly poised on court and mostly off court too. That has probably been that way for at least a couple years. And her game is clearly fantastic. It's really really good and solid. Plenty of variety. I do agree with Moxie and you that it's a bit too much too soon. Probably a lot to much too soon. As I wrote at length yesterday, I struggle to see anyone being truly dominant on the tour over the next 10 years. I think a couple different women will have dominant runs. Maybe one or two dominate a particular slam for 2 to 4 years at a time. But getting another Steffi or Serena seems unlikely. (And of course Serena has always gone on dominant runs and then had injuries or times when she was beatable. And Graf .... I really don't want to take anything from her. But Seles getting stabbed changed Graf's career. Graf has less slams and a serious competitor if Seles never gets stabbed.) More of the like of Henin and Venus and Sharapova if you ask me. On the one hand, I can see someone like Osaka having a solid 10+ slams by the end of her career which could stretch another 15 years. And while she's currently struggling, I can't see her being eclipsed by a bunch of other players. But I think there are plenty of players that can be competitive with her for years to come. We don't yet know how good Gauff or Anisimova or Vondrousova or Kostyuk or Yastremska or any of these youngsters are gonna be.
But I also understand the media's desire to pump up new talents. And Gauff doing this well at a slam at 15 does say a lot. I mean. Yes. Venus is 39 and has had a terrible year. But it's still Venus at Wimbledon. She's the second most accomplished grass court player on the planet. And any time she steps on a grass court she's a formidable opponent for anyone. Much less a 15 year old, no matter how good they are. Then she backed it up. The fact that she backed it up at all says something. Rybarikova is not seeded and has not been much of a threat over her career. But she has had a run to the semi here just 2 years ago. Now she gets Hercog instead of Keys. Hercog dispatched Keys with ease which suggests she should be in good form and can beat Gauff. And she's still a long time pro who knows how to weather a WTA level match much better than Gauff. But, while I'm inclined to say Gauff should always be considered the underdog at 15, Hercog isn't exactly the favorite. She's only made the third round at Wimbledon once. 2 years ago. She's a clay courter mostly. She won Lugano this year. But that was her first title since 2012. So she's playing better than she has in years. But grass still not exactly her forte. BUT, as everyone and their mother has been saying, this is the slowest Wimbledon has been, possibly ever. Which may have helped Gauff beat Venus and is helping Sloane Stephens, according to Sloane, and may help Hercog. But if she can beat Hercog, and she totally can, she'll get a real test (not that Venus wasn't) from Halep or Vika.
But going back to Perotta and the media. I can just about guarantee you half the reason she's getting so much extra hype is because she's American. Therefore the American media that is always starving for content to bring in those ad dollars will latch on to any American story. I think they were ready to for Anisimova at the French if she had been able to handle Barty and make the final (which she then would have had a chance to win). But one, it's the French. American's care a lot less about the French Open than Wimbledon. Anisimova, while young at just 17, isn't playing Venus at Wimbledon in the first round and winning at 15. But also. It's TOTALLY a push from her agent, Godsick. If a 15 year old non American had beaten Venus at Wimbledon, the story would have been about Venus. How age is catching up to her. She's done. Or close to it. Yada yada yada. So while there is some unnecessary hyperbole going on about the young woman, it actually might be a positive thing that basically all of the story has been about her rather than about Venus' loss.
