I wish all the tourneys make a similar gesture to Meldopova (instead of giving WC into MD).
Well DON'T compare her with Sharapova it's quite another story with Vera Zvonareva - IMHO.
NEW HAVEN, CT, USA - Two-time Grand Slam singles finalist and former World No.2 Vera Zvonareva will receive a wild card into the qualifying draw in her first WTA-level appearance since 2015. Talented Americans Kayla Day and Sofia Kenin also received wild cards with the final announcements coming on Thursday.
Zvonareva,
who married and gave birth to her first child last summer, first appeared on entry lists at ITF Circuit tournaments as early as March of this year, but played her first tournament a month later, winning her first tournament of any kind since 2012 at Sharm El Sheikh in July.
Besides starting a family, the Russian pursued education,
earning a third master's degree in Global Studies & Political Science through a previous agreement between Northeastern University and the Women’s Tennis Benefits Association.
2017: Comeback, ITF title
Zvonareva came back to tennis from a two years hiatus - her last match being the Katowice Open in April 2015 - and debuted in the $15,000 ITF tournament in
Istanbul.
[16] She lost in the main draw to British Katie Boulter after retiring in the second set. She then qualified for the $25,000 tournament in
Fergana, Uzbekistan, having been alternate in the qualifying draw.
Zvonareva won her first ITF title in
Sharm el Sheikh since 2002's
Naples $50,000 tournament. She defeated Slovak
Tereza Mihalikova in three sets. This became her overall third ITF title in her career.
