Anderson missed his chance to break early. Once Novak calmed down, you knew he'd find his way through.

I'll admit, Nole was lucky to get through this! Anderson was clocking the serve! You can't hit it if you can't reach it! :eyepop :cover  :dodgy:

Hard to imagine any upsets in the quarters. Djokovic vs Wawrinka and Murray vs Federer. I'm drooling already.

Nole has to up his game in the next rounds. Very tentative match all around. I know Anderson is improved and he was going to be a more difficult test, but if Nole was not playing as sharp as he should have.
Big sigh of relief anyways.

Very bad job by Anderson, he has lost a good opportunity to win, he just has to blame himself.
And Novak? lucky guy but I'd be very surprised if he would win this tournament unless he plays against others choked opponents

Some apaty on Djoker side, like in RG... and like when his uncle died. Wondering if anything happened we dont know yet.

But the public, that French player said all well. Problematic oldies.

Anderson was serving first. Still he felt the pressure and did two double faults to give away the game. If he was serving second, he probably would have double faulted four times in a row to give up the game. :cover

He needs 11 more to reach Fed's record and 12 more to overtake Fed. Do you think he can do it?

I don't think he can do it. Fed's records in that department are insane.

Hard to believe years ago, 11 was a record in majors getting to the quarters! What a joke! Just bolsters my argument about today's pros! :puzzled :cover :nono  :dodgy:

Hope he does not. But, it seems a doable given that Novak is in prime and all that he needs to do is to maintain for three years from now to beat it.

But he's already 28. Do you think he can keep making consecutive QFs until he's 31?

Interestingly enough 31 is the same age Federer was when that streak ended at Wimbledon 2013. Nole would be the same age at Wimby 2018. The main reason I don't think it lasts that long is that Nole doesn't have the great serve to bail him out when the rest of his game is off. And when he ages there will be more bad days. Nole's serve is very good, but it's not Roger's.

Assuming you are in top 4 of the rankings, to reach QF, it is enough if your game is good enough to guarantee a win against anybody outside of top 12. That is not asking for much. With Novak's solid base line game, returns and decent serve, I find it hard to imagine that he will go out to someone ranked below 12 in a GS in the next three years.

So, the real question is do you believe that he will be able to retain a spot in top four for the next three years. I would tend to think so. I would not bet on it one way or other, as it is a long term thing. But, it is certainly possible and even probable.
