Wow...I knew Roger would play on Day 1, but was kinda surprised to see Rafa does, too. "New normal," I guess.

Sort of astonishing that no one picked him to defend. I'm also surprised that the 2 that picked Nadal to win are MJ Fernandez and P-Mac, who I'd say are Fed people. Also surprising to me are the number that picked Raonic as a sleeper, since he's been slumping of late, and a couple for Nishikori, who I thought had some physical issues. Haas is my sleeper.

Well, what can you expect with such a season so far. There are better contenders out there. The 'love' is in the fact that he still is not (read above) in the 'sleeper' and 'toughest road' categories.

alright, here we go!

on court 12, we got Juergen Melzer starting against F3. Melzer is currently suffering from a small hernia, and will need surgery after Wimby. which reminds us of one problem of the first round exit-prize money increases... such an irresistible incentive for players to just show up, even if not fit, and collect the money. with three sets, they make more money than most players outside the top 100 make in three months, if not longer. i'm not saying that first round losers don't deserve to get their share, but it is a problem if they aren't fit.

Same quarter even. That's why it's weird. BOTH on day 1? Too odd for me.

It might be just me, but this is the slowest I have seen center court play. I am watching the Federer match and even though this is the first week, fresh grass, it looks slow as molasses. Anyone else watching?

I always find it difficult to tell, but yes it doesn't look as quick as Queens. Easy first set for Federer though. Both seem to be in a hurry.

Melzer is up two sets to one. Seems like he is making his money worthwhile.

^ nope, but followed the radio for a bit. apparently it's VERY windy, straight down the court, which i guess might slow down the game as well. didn't slow down Fed, though. 24 minutes for the first set, just one point on Fed's serve for Victor.

Melzer and F3 split the first two sets, are on the business end of the third now. maybe the injury will actually help Juergen swing away freely; he could be a tough challenge to F3, as he's definitely likes grass more than the Fog does. he also leads the h2h 2-0. btw, Juergen is also in doubles, with James Blake. how about that?

and Juergen with the break. 5-3, gonna serve for the set.
*just realized that Denis already posted the outcome of the second set. guess my ticker has some delay going on :)

The Fog is out to Melzer in 4 sets. First seed to tumble on the men's side.

Darn, I know it is ATP here but I just saw Azarenka have a nasty spill, crying in pain. Her reaction tells me she cannot go on but the trainer is here, let's see...

This is why we need the chat window. Too many matches going on the first week of a slam.

First guys into the second rund: Stakhovsky in straights over Dutra-Silva, Robert over Falla also in 3 sets and Paire over Ungur in 4 sets.

Roger through quickly. Lost only 8 points on his serve.
i guess he's working towards the Golden Bagel. he should remember, though, that you also need to qualify for the WTF to be eligible ;)

anyway, it seems that this Dark Knight didn't rise.

Federer wins. Flawless victory. FATALITY! -|-\m/-|-

Glad Rosol forced a 5th set. Didn't want to see him lose first round although he still might. Hopefully not though. I see Fed made only 6 UFEs today. Nice!
