I will however say that the ... excuses (albeit more from his camp and fans), and disingenuous modesty don't sit well with me.

And yet they sit quite neatly when it's Federer. :popcorn

I don't dislike Novak, but I didn't like the dancing with the ballboys in front of his defeated opponent, that kinda stuff is rude and cloying, and an example of a bloke who looks like he's trying too hard to be popular. Obviously, he doesn't dance with the confused innocent children when he loses.

All the Buddhist of Monte Carlo stuff is just because he's aspirational, in all the wrong directions. It doesn't bother me, I find that more amusing than his impersonations of fellow pros. But as a bloke, he seems genuinely decent and funny, and his heart seems to be in the right place (except when he beats Rafa :snicker )...

I really don't dislike anyone. It's easy to hate a football team, for example, but it's difficult to actually dislike or hate an individual. Sure, there are numerous players I prefer to watch over others and there's been some cases when I've been unimpressed with how players have conducted themselves on and off the court, but dislike is too strong a word. Unimpressed and indifferent seems more applicable. Maybe it's because I don't have a fervent passion for the sport like others do or there isn't one single player who I am a huge fan of. For example, hardcore Nadal fans may have a propensity to dislike Djokovic (or vice-versa), but not me. I guess I am just very neutral in that aspect.

John Isner... In fairness, Isner is a tad better on the ground than he's ever given much credit for. But he's slow.. very slow in between points... strutting round with faux paus exhaustion from the get go. His hang dog unhurried demeanour makes him painful to watch IMO. He's a bit more than a one trick pony... maybe a two trick pony with a sloth like gait.

Rafael Nadal... Most of my dislike for Nadal is historical. When he first burst onto the scene I felt he was another pure clay dog. Wheels like a turbo Sergi Bruguera complemented by huge topspin. The rumours circulating around Operacion Puerto over the next couple of years didn't help either.

Part of it was later tribal... I didn't like the bloke to begin with, but when he was taking Federer's torch a few years later I liked him even less. Sometimes you have to sit back and appreciate the way his game evolved and the top player he developed into across all surfaces. Other times it still sticks in the throat a bit. Can't say I'll ever like him but grudgingly appreciate him.. yes.

Pete Sampras... I was actually indifferent to Sampras when he played... I liked his game, but his dour persona never lended itself to me. I never liked Agassi either - probably less than Pete. I started disliking Pete in hindsight, largely because of his almost intolerable "fanbase" on forums in later years. Sad but true.

Dr Ivo... Couldn't bear the man because he WAS the ultimate one trick pony. His all round game makes Isner look like Santoro.

^I broadly agree with you britbox, although as I said before my feeling isn't of the strong variety. But I do have one exception... Dr Ivo. I've grown to like his tweets :) Although I'm not a fan of his game.

I truly disliked Ivan Lendl back in the Eighties and I never cared for the theatrics of Andre Agassi. Other than those two, I can't say there is a top player I genuinely disliked.

^I wasn't a fan of Lendl either, but it never rose to dislike. I was a fan of Mac, and then Edberg, and then Rafter, and then Roger. I guess there's a pattern in terms of style of play :D

well... i really liked the other thread for the positive idea. kinda scared to go into this one now. might add a Djokovic rant at some point though.

ah, well, might as well get it done. two reasons i dislike Novak Djokovic:
- posture: too perfect. i'm a slumping guy - and he's so overly stiff-straight, i can't bear to even watch it.
- hair: don't like the 'do. never met someone with this style that i liked. even as a kid, couldn't stand it.
- sarcastic grin and applauding when something doesn't go his way. every time. hate it.

i could rationalize beyond that, but i think it really was mainly that, incredibly superficial stuff, that turned me off. everything else came later. and once you're into disliking someone, everything else they do will have this negative spin on it and irk you even more.

that said, i respect the hell out of him for the player he is. just can't stand him. he's one of the few, to be honest. there's a lot of other players i don't really like watching (like Aderson), a lot that i don't care about, a couple that i'm kind of love/hate (Kyrgios, Kohlschreiber), but few that i have some emotional bias against (Bernard Tomic, maybe - the attitude and the hair (see? it's a thing, really); oh, and Judy Murray).

Djokovic.
As some of you have seen, I do congratulate him, and post realistic predictions about him, but I just despise him. When he first made some noise in that 2008 AO (he made noise much earlier but I'm trying to be specific), I was amazed how the guy beat Fed. His "mood" is so bad it's off the charts. He is probably the only player who gets frustrated whenever he makes an error. When he attempts his pretentious dtl backhand and misses he almost routinely starts swearing, or in his match with Karlovic this year, pure cancer. It is easy to look cool when you are winning, but he is the worst sportsman out of the top guys imo. (Just remember one of his pressers from 2008 I think, he literally said Rafa was nothing special on clay, later losing in straights.) My dislike for him really took off from 2011 onwards, and you can guess why. And I don't just dislike Djokovic, I dislike his game. His forehand has gotten uglier over the years with the spin he added to it. I just fail to realize how such a nervous and arrogant person could have achieved so much. And he sometimes switches to his grinder play style that I really have trouble watching.

Interesting; wouldn't have to change much but the name from Djokovic to Nadal and switch his ugly backhand to what you think of Nole's forehand! My dislike of Rafa was established even earlier with his total act of stalling, toweling off incessantly, and being "SO" wrong in challenging calls! He takes offense at losing single points all the time; even if he's killing the guy 6-0, 5-0, 40-love! I've seen him embarrass himself challenging a call when his opponent is already demoralized! He's been what I'd consider a real "piece of work," entitled, and spoiled from the beginning! :nono :cover  :dodgy:

Ah, so you differentiate between what kind of grinding play and heavy topspin forehands are fun to watch.

Well, my argument is that when Nadal goes into pure defense mode it looks like a player who knows what he is doing and is ready to turn defense into offense. What Djokovic does, and note that I said sometimes, is just push the ball back which really looks awful. It's not the topsin shots that are ugly, it's the way some blokes hit them. Anyways DarthFed, we shouldn't really be arguing about this, Fed was my fave for a longer time, so technically, we pray to the same church, so to speak.

There's just no comparison! While both Nole and Rafa can hit offensively from a defensive posture, Nole almost never gets caught up in such rallies, putting an offensive shot back at his opponent changing the dynamics surprisingly well! Rafa's stabbing, slicing, and dicing making his opponent hit one more shot! The reason I have little respect for it is due to the cowardice of his opposition to allow him to get away with floating balls back to the baseline and not cutting them off at the net; totally gutless play! Nole isn't just doing "his thing" against the 2nd and 3rd tier players, embarrassing Roger, Andy, and Rafa this season; putting some serious hurt on their confidence! The record proves it with a major and 4 Masters wins already before JUNE! He can possibly coast the rest of the season, but has every opportunity and reason to push himself and "finish" up on a run not seen in decades! :clap  :dodgy:

I'm sure if there's a Fedal final here, you won't hesitate to enjoy yourself. (Meanwhile I will be searching for a cliff to jump off).
