Jankovic has won this title twice and could be the player to beat..Maria will not repeat unfortunately because her loss in Madrid might have affected her mentally..

Serena can't slip only have the gap narrowed between her and Masha depending on what happens here. However, I don't think the number 1 ranking will become an issue until Wimbledon where Serena defends.

Well I am going for Li to bounce back from her early exit in Madrid and win Rome
This court suits her
I dont see Maria defending her title maybe too 'schell shocked' after Serena defeated her soundly in Madrid.

That has happened enough times now that it's not a factor.

Maria wouldn't be losing to Serena so much if she didn't make it to these finals. If she had been getting shell-shocked because of the losses, then she wouldn't be playing Serena in the first place.

It's a little like Federer and Nadal, especially on clay. Several times Federer would make his way to the finals, only to lose to Rafa. But he wouldn't have lost all of those finals if he hadn't played Rafa. But he had to get to Rafa, i.e., the finals in order to play him. As Federer himself once said, "I don't have a clay problem; I have a Rafa problem."

It's a similar situation with Maria and Serena: Sharapova doesn't have a tennis problem; she has a Serena problem.

I don't think so. She must be used to it by now. :D My prediction for this one is the same as for Madrid: Serena, Maria or Li. In order for Maria to win it Serena has to lose before the final. But that's not an impossible scenario. Although she can't beat Serena in a match between the two of them, Maria is less likely to be the victim of an upset in the earlier rounds on this surface than Serena.

Not Caro. Knocked out again in the 1st round of a tourney. She really is slumping something terrible.

What is with Muguruza and her really lopsided scores I always see associated with her matches? Is she like Kvitova where she has severe ADHD?

Yeah but a lot of her scores I usually see are like 6-1, 0-6, 6-2 which is very reminiscent of Kvitova crappy matches.

OK, who is left?
Not surprisingly, the top vote getters are still here, but surprise...
Vika, Na, Sara, Samantha and Petra who have a combined total of 1 vote are still here in the last 16

Let the best lady win!

Pova is defending so cannot add points. I understand that, but didn't Serena play a round or two last year? If she did, she will have to play this year or lose points in which case she can slip in the rankings.

I voted for Li Na, and was surprised that there were actually 3 votes for her. I just did not want to vote for the obvious (i-e Serena or Maria)

Having said that Serena will keep the top spot despite the ROme results. Serena withdrew from her SF match last year against Li Na and is defending only 395 points, while Sharapova being defending champion is defending 900 points.
Total points as of now for both players are
- Serena - 11,115
- Sharapova - 10,690

The point difference is 425, which is greater than defending points of Serena, plus Serena already has won her second round encounter. So, the chances for Sharapova being the top seed for the French Open or even Wimbledon is out of question.

Serena is defending 250 points so if she goes beyond the qtrs she will gain more and if she does well at RG

Serena is defending 395 since she was a semi-finalist last year, but withdrew from her match against Li, prior to the match due to some injury (Can't recall the injury though). I reconfirmed the defending points of Serena from the WTA site as well. She is defending 395 in Rome

Yeah, she did not play the semi-final, however, WTA site is showing 395 in her points breakdown and it is right considering she did win her QF and made the semis.

We will have to wait and see what happens right now Serena is blowing hot, but she can always blow cold at a moments notice.
