Nothing is overblown and misunderstood in tennis like the issue of surfaces. We know the surfaces are more homogenous but according to some, the AO is mega slow (it isn't) and Wimbledon plays like clay in the second week. I honestly think this is a direct result of the emergence of Rafael Nadal as an all court player. And yeah, I'm aware slowing down the surfaces was an issue before he came along, but you never heard anything is silly as Wimbledon playing like clay until he reached the final for the first time.

The main issue with the AO these days isn't the speed but the bounce which imo was much better on the older Rebound Ace surface. Hardcourt is meant to reward aggressive play and the higher bounce on Plexicushion has detracted a lot from that as defensive players can now more easily run balls down as they hang in the air longer and don't fly through the air as easily for clean winners as they did on the Rebound Ace surface. The way it is now we're subjected to 6 hour finals which frankly is ridiculous for a hardcourt surface. Rally after rally after rally. I'm fine with rallies in matches but not on practically every point. When the bounce has been altered on the surface to the extent that it makes hitting winners so much harder that doesn't make it a proper hardcourt anymore. Lower bouncing hardcourt matches are not only more normal length but imo (and each to their own if you happen to love 6 hours of sprinting along the baseline but I don't) much more aesthetically watchable as the lower bounce enables players to hit a lot more winners.

And no this isn't a help Federer by changing the surface comment, I happen to think it makes it better to watch first and foremost and I do like a lot of other players beside Federer but it's screwing up their chances too the way the surface plays now.

I will help you on the AO surface:

Rebound Ace actually allowed the ball to bounce HIGHER....imaging that. Watch the videos.

Plexi keeps the ball lower relative speaking, has more grit (more bite) BUT plays a little bit slower. Meaning, it's harder to hit through the court despite the lower bounce.

I will tell you this, plexi has allowed EPIC matches of ATTACKING tennis at it's very best with hundreds of winners hit by a single player. Roddick/Koly, Verdasco/Nadal, Tsonga/Nadal just to name a few. Tell me how in 2008 the surface stop Tsonga from DEMOLISHING Nadal with all out aggressive, in your face tennis?

So here you are, talking about grass but you don't even accurately describes the difference between rebound ace and plexi.

In fairness in that match Tsonga demolished Nadal mostly at the net with incredible stop volleys. Of course he hit winners too but that match was mostly won at the net. Sadly Tsonga has come nowhere close to replicating that performance against anyone. And yes, my bad the bounce was higher on Rebound Ace. For some reason I had it in my head that it was lower but I mixed that up with the old surface actually taking more spin. In any case I preferred the old surface more and will promptly get my eyes tested.

Yeah, I know. Poor Nadal is the victim of all these unfair and false implications.

Nadal is not a victim of anything. 12 slams says most of those who face him are victims. People however, are a victim of occasional ignorance, and subscribing into narratives without digging deeper. Your reply literally makes no sense, as it has nothing to do with what I've said.

Tsonga did everything in that match, not just amazing volleys but I understand why would you remember the volleys....it was awesome. What do you mean sadly? That level of tennis was an out of body experience literally; call it the ZONE. You can replicate that.

The old surface was fun as well, I had nothing against it but the players found it health hazard during the heat waves.

If Cosmo and I revive the "shirtless man" thread, you'll only have yourself to blame, Mastoor. ;)

All those English birds didn't complain so I don't think neither you and Cosmo should. Where is she btw?

Im going to say that I expect Federer to fail -- more than I expect him to succeed.

I wasn't complaining, just expecting you would when we follow suit and post up a bunch of buff guys. ;) Cosmo's around somewhere...just posting when she has something to say, I guess.

In the recent years, the lack of big surprises was usually the status quo, with vrry few surprises in the first few rounds. Yesterday we had surprisingly many of them, with 2 top 10 seeds eliminated right away (Nadal and Wawrinka), also Tipsarevic and Fognini.
Curious if the pattern of unpredictability will continue today

i must say that StantheMan, Tipsy and F3 are hardly surprises. Stan happened to draw a former Wimby champ, Tipsarevic has been so regularly disappointing that it doesn't technically qualify as surprise/disappointment anymore. Fab Fonigni was seeded, but he's no grass court expert, faced a former top 10 player who knows his way around the Wimby courts.

so i don't think we got a real 'pattern of unpredictability' here. still, i'm curious about other upcoming upsets, and can imagine quite well that we'll have more of those than usual on these grounds.

Two more seeded out today:

Kohlschreiber retired in the 5th set against Dodig and Tomic takes out Querrey.

Hehe exactly. He probably also both surprised and disappointed himself too. He must feel terrible at the moment.

After the blood-bath that was today, apparently anyone could surprise us, and anyone could disappoint us.
