I think it's an interesting question. While Roger is 5 years older, his body (with the exception of this year and in 2013 when he had back issues part of the year) has held up much better. I think a lot will ride on how they both fare next year. Will Rafa keep it at assuming he only wins the occasional clay Masters tournament? Will Roger keep going if he gets to the semis and, if lucky, another Wimbledon final, and perhaps a Masters here and there?

Huh? He's due back in barely over 3 months.

C'mon Front--you should know better lol. Carol is the biggest adherent to schadenfreude on the board lol. She lamented the "lack of competition" in the men's game (in an attempt to discount the legitimacy of Novak's dominance), but now is prognosticating that Roger is DONE and will be dancing at the news of Novak's elbow injury. Translation: ANYTHING to help Rafa :).

His career is finished. Gammy knee and still makes the Wimbledon semi finals. But yeah, his career seems to be finished. That's why he's coming back very start of 2017. Some gem reading on this site alright!

I think we might get more insight next year, both have had weird seasons, but both have had moments of promise. If they or one of them can recover next year, then... no idea.

AntiPusher, don't you think Carol has something to do with that? It takes two to tango. She gets "attacked" because just about everything she says about Fed is negative.

Not that anyone should be "attacked" - we should be able to disagree like adults.

I can't speak for Carol but I think she is fair.. I haven't seen her accuse Roger of being on PEDS, taking excessive time for serving, bio breaks or etc.. I think Carol is fair with her criticism of Roger.

Maybe that's 'cos he doesn't take excessive time for serving, doesn't use dodgy MTOs or any of that crap and there's little to go on that he's ever taken PEDs. She literally wouldn't have much to go on there.

Well, if she used your methods, she'd have gazillions of stuff to go on. Sheesh, if Federer was Spanish, etc. However, my reply was that old Wodger will retire first, and my reasoning is simple.

He's five years older, and he's suddenly gone absent from the tour. He was fine at Wimbledon, but he scarpered just before the Olympics. Something is wrong. And at his age, things going wrong in this way don't sort themselves out too fast.

Rafa, by contrast, is having a good spell of health, and he's not far off a big result, but regardless of that, he'll play on. He's missed too much over the years through injury to just walk away. Federer might find the game too much for him when he returns, though I'd expect him to play another two years, at least...

Nah, the problem here is that some Rogers fans posters can say whatever about Nadal and it's ok but when they get the respond that they deserve so far then "she likes to attack Roger, how she can do that, Roger is perfect, how dare she....that's a sin!"........:laydownlaughing
Come on guys, now it's my turn to say that you should try to be more adult :nono
Is this thread about who will retire before? ok, my opinion is that I don't see Roger playing anymore and if he would do it it would be just for one more year, that's not an attack but something not too difficult to see, period!

No. She said it seems his career is finished. Stepanek is almost 38 and frankly made a mockery of Murray at RG and should have won that match so there's no fear of Roger finding the game too much for him given he's just plain better at everything than Stepanek (who I'm a big fan of) is.

This is for you, Carol.

"Federer, who turns 35 next month, insisted though that he will come back fighting in 2017.

He said: “The doctors advised that if I want to play on the ATP World Tour injury free for another few years, as I intend to do, I must give both my knee and body the proper time to fully recover. It is tough to miss the rest of the year."

“I am as motivated as ever and plan to put all my energy towards coming back strong, healthy and in shape to play attacking tennis in 2017.”

A few more years. A couple is 2. A few is more than 2. Sorry to disappoint you 'cos I know you can't stand him but he's not going anywhere right now and maybe you didn't read it properly when he first said it so you can read it now, properly.

Carol's point is that she feels that Roger wants to be consistently measure by the winning standards of today's grand slam winners(Stan, Andy and Novak). I doubt very seriously if Roger wants to hang around to have Stepanek's on and off the court success.

Roger will always be better than Stepanek and you can bet if he was leading Murray by 2 sets to 0 he would not lose the match and it would not go to 5th set either so 37, 38, it doesn't matter, Roger would not have lost that match. He'll be posting much better results than Stepanek the rest of his career and you know it. Stepanek should have won that match but he didn't so it was still a 1st round loss. Roger is still making slam finals and semis.
