I think Chrissy and Martina winning 18 when they had to face each other about a 100,000 times is greater than Serena winning 18 when her main opposition is Twiddly Thumbs and Barbie Doll. No doubt Serena is great, but she's suffered from not having a giant as a rival. Who knows how many Chrissy or Martina would have, if they only faced the broads Serena faces?

I'm not sure Johnny Mac's contribution was always a positive one, but I like your thinking!

The Venus Rose dish, that's a gorgeous title. The Wimbledon men's title is the best:

"The All England Lawn Tennis Club Single Handed Championship of the World".

It's bizarre that they put in the "single handed" bit - but it adds to the authority of the thing.

I never liked the "all England" bit..or the wimby club being "the all England club"..

sounds provincial n vaguely racist, and reeking of the old empire..:spacecadet: ahh the days of the raj and aarrrghhhhhhhhh.

Henin was Serena's last real rival! The "also-rans" of today are all head cases, led by Sharapova and Azarenka!

How about the Mats Wilander Trophy for the Australian Open? He beat McEnroe/Lendl to win the 1983 title and that really started the resurgence of the tournament and the top players committing to it. He also won it twice on grass and once on hard court.

I don't think they will be changing the name to a non-Australian any time soon. ;)

Haha, true. I just thought I'd throw that out there. Besides, Wilander already has the greatest name ever for a tennis show.

Game, Set and Mats. :p

Oh please; Wilander wouldn't make my top 20, much less a career worthy of a major trophy named after him! The man played as a human backboard, had moderate success, became #1 for about a minute, only to become more a footnote in the grand scheme of things when it comes to his tennis era! His main claim to fame should be his record at the FO; esp. his 1st win in '82 over Vilas as a 17 y.o.! He did win a couple AO on grass, but Edberg as a kid was the only one who ventured down there with him! I'll even give him credit for embarrassing the other top players to finally put the tourney on their calendar! So man never went due to it being windy, with bug attacks, and so far away, it just wasn't worth the trip; esp. in amateur era when US players were compelled to stay 2-3 months or so to make the trip worth it to the USTA who was footing the bill! He was probably the only player who could frustrate Lendl, beating him at the '88 USO, '88 Masters, and the '85 FO when it really counted!

I know, I know. I said it in half jest because there are other players who deserve it more but I thought Mats should at least get some recognition for what he did. Only three others have passed him in the number of Australian Open titles so Mats should get his due. Always loved watching the way he would frustrate the heck out of Lendl back in the day. McEnroe has said that Mats was the smartest player he played.

I have to go look it up, but I believe McEnroe and Wilander have the longest Davis Cup match in games and time going to an extended 5 set, 6 plus hour marathon! :eyepop :popcorn :nono :dodgy:

I think Serena now holds the record for the most AO titles in the open era. She has either tied Chrissy at the USO or surpassed her by one title.
