Here are the French players in the top 100:
13. Simon
14. Monfils
15. Tsonga
21. Gasquet
32. Mannarino
45. Chardy
47. Benneteau
71. Paire
90. Pouille

Clearly Tsonga is the most accomplished, with the best historical record, including 2 Masters titles. But talent? I could agree with Monfils. He should at least be a second tier player and fixture in the top 10, but is such a headcase. His career record in ATP 500 and Masters finals says a lot: 0-6 (or 0-4 and 0-2, respectively).

That is 9 of them. Of them Julien is not playing this year. Of the remaining 8, six of them are still alive after two rounds. I have not checked explicitly, but I suspect that is probably the largest contingent from any country that are alive at this point of time.

There are 12 Spaniards in the top 100. Or did you mean at Roland Garros?

The problem for me with Jo is that he has an exploitable technical weakness. I don't see that with Gael. Gael's problem is that he is more focussed on entertaining than winning. And he seems to take no strategic guidance about how to win a match. It's extremely frustrating to watch sometimes

Federer has the same issue. But yeah, the backhand is pretty mediocre, also Jo can be a bit of a headcase. I like all of the French players listed except Gasquet for some reason. And yes I actually can enjoy Simon's matches, he can hit some great defensive shots with his backhand.

Federer's technique is as close to flawless as it gets.

By the way, the notion that Monfils is the most talented anything is absurd. He's a freak athlete with decent talent. That's about it.

I thought I was alone on this...
