defo season of 2 sections..

djoko going berserk inc winning the oh so elusive French open..plus aussie iw-maimi double, record rank points haul.

..then andy going mental with 60-4 w/l from madrid open or something and cleaning up big time inc wimby-og gold-wtf-ye no1

maybe it should be an andy/djoko dead heat like the 1st London marathon in march1981 when two blokes crossed the winning line together (no homo).

how about for two individuals, for Novak the best player in 2016 is Novak. Surely he would rather keep his results this year, as he finally won RG to complete his own set of slams. For Andy, he wouldn't want to give up the fact that he won YEC for the first time and also ended the year No. 1 also for the first time ever.

If they exchanged records, Andy would have 2 slams.....yes very important but he doesn't have YEC at all and more importantly he doesn't finish no.1. For Novak, he would have Olympic Gold which is very valuable to him, wins YEC for 5 consecutive years but misses out RG which was still elusive to him.

So neither would want to exchange records IMO.

As far as I'm concerned, Nadal was the best player in 2013. It's a no-brainer.

It wasn't the first time ITF embarrassed itself. In 1990 Edberg criticised the ITF's Grand slam and they took their revenge with their award going to Lendl.
So I guess it's fair play on Novak for 2013, then. I don't believe the YEC beats 2 Majors, and it makes the ITF look like they have a very short-term memory.

ITF pays more emphasis to their own events: majors, Olympic games and Davis Cup. They always did. I think that Andy deserved it this year. Nole did well in just 3 of their events: AO, FO and USO, Andy did well in all majors and in their other events, winning Gold and playing DC. I don't know why you are so hung on 2013. Nole was deserving of his title in 2013 as he played all 4 majors, won 1, made 2 finals and 1 semi-final, made the finals of DC. Rafa technically played only 2 majors that year (as he was out of Wimbledon in the 1st round) and didn't play DC at all. You can disagree with it, but can you really say that Nole didn't deserve it in 2013? I think it is good that there was a new winner this year. Andy played well throughout the whole year, consistency should be rewarded as well.

Well, Rafa played 3 GS in 2013 and he won 2 of them. He also won Indian Wells and later Barcelona, Madrid, Roma and RG. He lost in Wimbledon limping in the final set ( because his knee) but later he won Montreal, Cincinnati and the USO. I think he was the best player that year.

If I'm hung up on 2013, it's because I'm defending Rafa. That's understandable as a fan. I do think Rafa deserved it more in 2013, as he won more important titles, and I don't think you get extra points for playing more events, if you don't win them, even if you do well. I can see why this year was close, as they fairly neatly divided the year as to who dominated. And since you say that the ITF weighs the Olympics heavily, and as Andy was the YE#1, I guess that tips it. Anyway, I am please for him. He's been a bridesmaid for a long time.

2 slams are 2 slams, Djokovic slam is historical, and 3-2 (2-0 at slams) is also something.

Djokovic = real #1
Then can you explain me why he is not #1 anymore?

Murray is computer #1, Djokovic is the real #1. I bet Mugray would swap his season with Djokovic's.
Tennis is fair, If Muzz is now #1 it's because he deserves it
Marry Christmas!

I think we've discussed this one a bit: Both players have reasons for being really happy about the year they've had. Novak's is personally AND historically significant. Murray has duplicated a couple of things, but in ways that bring honor particularly to British tennis. And he's finally reached #1. Each has reasons to be very pleased with his year. But, in any case, it's not a subjective thing for fans, or about what each would prefer...the Year-End #1 is a points issue, and the one who got there was Andy.

Djokovic won two slams so I'd say Djokovic. It's all about the slams.
