Alongside the discussion of court homogenisation, I just read a good point on social media about the rule change in 2001, changing the number of seeds from 16 to 32, which meant that in todays game, early upsets are less likely as the person who posted this said:
This simple rule change literally made it easier for top players to win majors in the 21st century.
Using AO25 as an example, a seeded player’s FIRST ROUND opponent could’ve been a Lehecka, Muchova, Hurkacz, Perricard, Ostapenko or Ben Shelton - all ranked between #17-32 right now.
Indeed, the locations of the “dangerous floaters” in the Main Draw used to be the TALK OF THE TOWN before every Slam. Now it’s hardly ever mentioned.
