The OP's title "Does Nadal Need Federer" obviously raises the question of
whether Nadal's game will decline as a side effect of Fed's game declining.
When one member of a couple who have lived together
a long time dies, ususally the other one dies pretty soon too. Is this
almost like that?

Leaving aside the question of whether Fed's deterioration is complete,
how many believe that Nadal's decline will follow very soon after Fed's
decline (say within an year or so).

Thanks for all the replies guys.

GSM: you got exactly what I'm saying. It's interesting to consider, though we'll have to wait and see what happens. I actually suspect Federer's current struggles began when Roddick announced he was retiring. Roger looked visibly taken aback by Roddick's retirement during an interview at last year's US Open. He was No. 1 at the time and playing very well, but since has obviously not played as well. I bet Roddick's exit played with Roger's mind a bit: "Oh wow, it's only me left now."

Olderer should be "happy" to see Nalby retire too. The Argie was one of his best "nemesis" and both of them have the same age
Roddick was a little bit younger when he retired, Ferrero was 31, Safin 30: it's obvious that around 31 is a decent age for retirement but Haas and Ferrer won't agree with me !!
