Just a little aside on Venus

On This Day In 2002: Venus Becomes No.1

Always On Time by Ja Rule and Ashanti was the No.1 song, Queen Of The Damned starring the late Aaliyah was the No.1 movie, and Venus Williams was the first African-American woman to rise to No.1.

PALM BEACH GARDENS, FL, USA - It had been building for a few years - she won her first two Grand Slams at Wimbledon and the US Open in 2000, and then repeated at both in 2001 - but on February 25, 2002 it all came together for the first time as Venus Williams finally got to No.1.

After a 12-month period that saw her win 56 of 61 matches and nine titles - Miami, Hamburg, Wimbledon, San Diego, New Haven and the US Open in 2001, and Gold Coast, Paris and Antwerp in 2002 - Williams rose from No.2 to No.1 on February 25, 2002, overtaking Jennifer Capriati.

Williams was the first African-American woman to rise to No.1, in either singles or doubles.

And she would eventually spend a total of 11 weeks at the top spot in 2002 - three from February 25 to March 17, four from April 22 to May 19 and four more from June 10 to July 7. She replaced Capriati at No.1 in each of those stints - but she ultimately lost it to sister Serena Williams on July 8, 2002.

A few more throwbacks to February 25, 2002...
