weird thing is that the last 2 or three games were the best Federer played all match. del Potro deserved the win and honestly I put my money on him for the semi.

When you don't believe in yourself, you make stupid decisions. That is the position Roger is in. He is all over the place, all tournament..

That's the consequence of playing injured or when you've just recovered from an injury. Nadal is probably licking his chops. Like the entire clay season and the French Open - he literally doesn't have to beat anybody to win this sucker.

I don't know if it's the back today. He just wasn't in good form since Wimbledon and mentally he played a terrible match. Shot selection and then whatever you call that 3rd set TB. He's moving and hitting leagues better than the first and second round but he's inconsistent and playing terrible in the big moments.
F#ck..f$ck. F@ck..damn..damn.damn..

LOL! I'm sure he'll get asked about his back in press afterwards. McEnroe said he wasn't sitting on many of the changeovers and was back on court before the break was over and that it wasn't a good sign because it meant he didn't want to sit for very long.

...bad for Roger that his back gave out at the wrong time!

At this point, only an assumption.

Least likely outcome was an easy win for DP. Still puzzled as to what Roger was thinking out there. Worst shot selection I've seen from him and way too many Andy Roddick moments. Time to regroup for 2018, he won't get to #1 after Nadal coasts to this easy title.

del Potro either has the flu, is recovering from it, or has just recovered from it. At least that's what I've read on this board. What's the difference?

Well the 3rd last game Fed didn't get a single return in play. The 2nd last game he fell behind 0-30 after almost getting decapitated when he hit an easy put away right back to the Del Po forehand. He played a bunch of good points after that to hold. And then the highlight of the last game was an easy put away volley he almost hit into the stands to set up match point. If those were his best games he may have been worse than I thought.

Congrats to JMDP on another SF after so much injury woes. If Roger has to lose to someone at USO, I would definitely pick JMDP as he is such a nice guy.

However, I certainly don't think JMDP played well. Having said that, he did not have a need to play well as Fed sucked mostly tonight.
This is not to belittle JMDP or anything like that. In 2009, JMDP played tremendously and took it away from Roger. That is not the case
today. Both players did not play well and JMDP was steady enough to win the match. In the last set, JMDP played very steadily; I think
he had dozen winners to 0 errors in that set.

Roger wasn't aggressive in the first set. Did he play a lot from the back? He picked his game up in the 2nd set and I was already thinking about him winning at times. Then again it fell down and he lost it. His nerves did not do well today. A bad day, what else? He couldn't play his game at its best. Del Potro had all the answers. Roger wasn't particularly bad. He had the better differential. But Del Potro' serve was simply better today. So that may be the prime reason for this win.

Any loss is hard to take. I felt it totally. But let's say Roger had a stellar season coming back in 2017 to add 2 slams to his resume. I think it's huge at this age. And what he has done is pretty great at this stage of his career. This is probably more than what he would have expected from his comeback. So, I am not too much gutted. It's not necessary to make it 20, is it? 19 is a pretty amazing number already. And I think most of Roger fans don't mind Roger losing to Del Potro as compared to a Novak or Rafa. I think this tournament is far from being Rafa's granted silverware. I have my hopes up for Delpo. Right now he is again playing cool and will throw the kitchen sink at everyone I would hope. This is a good result for him. Althought we would not have wanted this at the cost of Roger, we can be happy for Delpo's return. Should not he have won a few grand slams at least on hards if not for his ever-ailing wrist. His return would be great for tennis. He still has a lot of years left and can make the most out of it. And this adds spice to the mix.

Yes, now Rafa's the favourite for YE no. 1. But it's not over yet. If Rafa does not reach the finals then Roger would go for it again in the remaining masters and WTF. But, the fatigue and back are the two things I am worried about right now.

In hindsight, I think Roger could have skipped Montreal and gone to Cincy. He could have spent the time making his body ready to take the pressure of tennis matches. And Cincy has a surface Roger knows better than anyone. Sigh.
