Well. A bit of a surprising start from the 16 year old Svajda. 3-love over Lorenzi. Lorenzi a journeyman and more than twice Svajda's age. But with all that experience I'd expect him to be doing better than he is so far. Had two break back points in the last game and Svajda survived. Saved one with his first pro level ace. Kid looks like he's 140 pounds soaking wet and will never be one of these giant guys. He'll be lucky to crack 6 foot. And Lorenzi will probably settle and take this match, even if he has to do it in 4 or 5. But Svajda at least not looking like he's nervous. Looks like he's up to the task and taking it all in stride. Fairly impressive.

I think Lorenzi may be struggling with pressure he feels to beat a kid like this. Because he is just spraying errors and making all the wrong choices. Svajda just broke again and has 2 game points for 5 love.

Meanwhile Garin has taken control of the fifth set.

Lorenzi hanging in there better the last couple points and Svajda missing. Deuce. Annnnnnnd break point Lorenzi. Lorenzi just putting everything back in that rally. Everything down the middle. High and loopy. Gave Svajda nothing. But then Lorenzi missed the second serve return. Deuce. Took a few rally balls, but Svajda finding a nice inside in forehand to open up the court and move forward. And holds with a very nice backhand. 5-love. So impressive. Still. Just one set. If Lorenzi settles and continues to have the mindset that he's just not going to miss, he'll probably eventually get the better of him in the next 3 sets. But. The kid definitely doesn't look like he's going anywhere. Such a big break for Anderson to pull out. From a huge serve that the kid probably couldn't handle to Lorenzi.

So Svajda finally missing a bit more. His serve getting slower. Maybe feeling the nerves finally. Lorenzi breaks back. Looks like he's finally getting steadier.

The commentators mentioned it early on in the match. The kid's footwork is great. And his timing is really solid. The not so secret secret to his success.

Garin finishes off Eubanks. Good win for him. Struggled. But pulled it out.

Lorenzi holds for 3-5. But Svajda getting it done up at the net in the first point of his serve. Lorenzi made him play a few volleys but he handled it well. Then another poor second serve return from Lorenzi. And Lorenzi misses slightly long to give Svajda 3 set points. And he takes it with a serve and volley. Good for him. Win or lose this match, he's got a lot to be proud of from that first set. Definitely playing at a pro level, even if a low pro level, at 16. Give him a few inches, some weight, and a couple years and he's got a future in tennis.

Svajda just keeps plugging away and Lorenzi is still just completely blowing this. Just missing too much. At some point you've gotta think there's something about Svajda's ball that is causing some of that. But I think it's gotta be more of a mental problem on Lorenzi's part. But Svajda is just playing really well. Gets to everything. Moving so well.

Commentators now talking about the last player to play the US Open this young. Donald Young in 2005 was the last 16 year old man to play the US Open main draw. 14 years. Svajda turns 17 in late November.

He's at deuce on Lorenzi's serve again. Looking for a 3-love lead.

Kecmanovic living up to his solid play this summer. Djere not up to it so far. Which isn't surprising. Kecmanovic another teenager. Could have 3 teenagers win today if Svajda can join Brooksby. He's up 3-1 in the second.

And Carballes Baena giving Djokovic everything he can handle on Arthur Ashe. Playing well. Djokovic looking like he's going through his common first and second round annoyances or moodiness. But broke to take the first set. So not playing poorly. Just not playing his cleanest tennis. So he's a bit frustrated with himself. Hopefully Carballes Baena doesn't got away.

And Opelka has the break yet again, now in the third set. And that may be all she wrote. Serving at 3-2. Fognini will have to find something special from here.

Lorenzi now 5-3 in the second set. Finally getting some reward from just hanging in there. Svajda finally coming down a bit. Missing more. Saved one break point there. But not the second. Was up 3-1. Has lost 4 straight games. Lorenzi's experience winning out over the last half hour.

Djokovic pulling away early in the second set. Kecmanovic pulling away in the second set.

Herbert now up a break in the fourth after sneaking out the third set 8-6 in the tiebreak.

And Dimitrov up an early break on Seppi. Up 4-1.

Break back point for Svajda.

This kid returning well. At least on second serves. Just hit three great return winners to win three points in a row from set point down. Back on serve.

Well Lorenzi got another break/set point. But Svajda saved it and got the hold. 5-all.

Djokovic better in the second set. But Carballes Baena going away. Just sort of handing it to him. Struggling on serve.
Same with Kecmanovic and Djere.

Glad to see Querrey up in the first set. As he should be against Londero. But ya never know with Querrey.

4-love in the tiebreak. Svajda just keeps plugging away. Lorenzi faltering in the rallies first. AND Svajda is getting lucky. Caught the back of the line to go up 5-1.

But 3 quick points for Lorenzi after the change of ends and it's 5-4.

So impressive from this kid though. Takes the breaker. 2 sets to love. Really tough mentally from him that set. Up 3-1 he loses 4 straight games. But breaks back and holds. Get to a tiebreak and immediately takes control. But loses 4 straight points to let Lorenzi back in. Then gets the last 2 points to take it.

And with that. You all get a reprieve from my over posting. Gotta run to work.

Well the upsets have started as I thought with FFF going out in the 1st round! Those early matches can be treacherous; esp. if the qualifier had a tough and beneficial run going in! There will be more I'm sure! :yesyes:  :banghead: :cuckoo:    :ptennis:

Does not look as Medvedev will be affected much by how much tennis he played in the summer. The week off was probably just enough for him to recharge. He disposed very easily by his first round opponent.

"I told you so". An young guy like him a week off should be enough to wipe off three weeks of play before. Even if he loses, it won't be because he is tired. Anyway, I have him as my semifinalist from the first quarter (even though I delegated the task of taking away Nole to The Man).

I was not the one to "say so". Actually I got concerned as soon as I saw him in Novak's bracket.

Hmmm, you sound like that sportswriter, Mike Lupica who hedges his bets! He says some player or team will do well, but won't be surprised if they lose for some reason or another! Much too much in being wishy-washy! Either Medvedev will make it to the semi's or he doesn't; pick one! :nono:  :banghead: :cuckoo:   :ptennis:

Never cared for Querrey's goober, lackadaisical court presence! I'm still offended by someone comparing his looks to Kachanov! :cuckoo:

Did not SQ sign up for some TV show that is supposed to find him a wife ("I am a celebrity, looking for a girl" or some thing like that is that show).
