This Nishioka is not even testing Fred. Specially pathetic since he's lefty. How did he make it to the main draw?

We will see if Paire tests him. The way he returned serve at Cincy he would have been tested by anyone.

They just said he could protect it with a ranking of 66 or above. That sounds really high, they shouldn't have a protected ranking when they are that low.

This is the same Federer we saw in Cincinnati. He is now missing easy overheads.

Pathetic end to this one...if it is the end. I think even Paire would be a threat at this point. Roger needs to get his head back in the game and gear up for 2019. I know he won't sit out the rest of the year but I wish he would.

He got through thankfully but I'd be surprised if he makes the QF date with Novak.

I got to watch only the third set of Federer. It looks like he is fine and in form.

But, Nishioka upped his game and even managed to break Fed.

I remember this guy Nishioka very well. He is a feisty player. I was very impressed by his play in the sunshine double last year or the year before, just before he got injured. One should not be fooled by his size.

Next up for Fed is Benoit Paire, who played him close on grass this year.

p.s. The moment one wears Uniglo, they start sucking on gimme overhead shots.

I can't believe Nick is about to win two sets in a row. I thought he wins and then tanks one.

Federer played very well for two and a half sets. It got a bit weird at the end, but I am encouraged.

Yes, I agree. The only thing he gets by playing the rest of the year is a e.o.y. top 5 spot. I'd say balls to ranking. Ranking can't prevent an Anderson type meltdown. After what happened this summer, he should know that he will not be the favorite at AO-19 and no use pretending that he is.

But yeah he won't sit out the rest of the year. His contracts won't let him.

Roger responding to a question on conditions: 'this is the slowest USopen in years' and 'night time is even slower'. Also he mentioned that the court is playing very bouncy.
