I think I'm more worried about Stepanek than I am about Verdasco or Tsonga to be honest. This will be a fascinating tournament even without Rafa.

Most of us said this about Wimbledon, but with the way this draw has panned out, this is surely Fed's best chance of adding number 18 to his tally. I really can't see where a conqueror is coming from his half of the draw, unless Berdych suddenly returns to his best form and makes his way to the semi finals. The only guys that 'should' give him any real headaches in a slam final are Djokovic or Murray and to get there they will have both had to go through some serious battles.

Raonic has a good shot at the semi finals getting drawn into unreliable Stan's quarter.

Forget about Murray - Tsonga has actually won something recently and his draw is cantankerous!

A bit late to the discussion but Roger can close his eyes till the final, what a draw he was given

I think the tennis gods Hate poor Muzz,he must have done something to them in his previous life:)

Novak has some tricky opponents,he will need to be focused thats for certain.Still I am staying with my 2nd favourite player Novak to stay strong and win.

Headline on the U.S. Open site ' No easy draw for Nole, Fed'.
Decided to fix for them ' No easy draw for Nole, no easier draw for Fed' :)

Stakhovsky, Rosol, Darcis, Robredo were easy on paper too. Nothing is a given in sport, ever.

Ladies and Gentlemen,

The draw ceremony is over; Here is the draw in html form. Here is the draw in PDF form.

Here is the draw restricted to top 16 seeds, that is easy to digest.

-------------------------
Novak - Isner
Tsonga - Murray
-------------------------
Stan - Robredo
Kishori - Milos
-------------------------
Bird - Gulbis
Cilic - Ferrer
--------------------------
Grigor - Gasquet
Fognini - Federer
---------------------------

How did they do the draw ceremony? Was it the past year's champions (or surrogate for Rafa)? Was it done in public?

Ferrer may not make it through when I look at his draw. Wawrinka does not have it easy either. Federer's draw does not look that bad it if holds to form, but there are some dangers lurking in the form of Grigor, Monfils and Meltzer--guys that when playing well and hanging around can bother Roger. Now, if he plays at the levels he has the past few months, then maybe only Grigor will pose a problem, but I doubt it.

It was done in public and shown live for free. So, let us put a stop to the usual baseless conspiracy
theories over the draw right now.

^ Believe me, GSM, when I tell you that I in no way subscribe to such theories. I asked to cast light on the fact it is random--just like good or bad fortune has had a role in many great players' lives. Look at those who had bouts with Mono, Delpo and his wrists, Rafa missing out on a couple majors due to injury, Muster, Haas and his many misfortunes, Seles and her tragic deal, Graf's fathers problems that weighed on her. Many have had bad luck and some have had amazing luck not have certain mishaps befall them; i.e., Connors, Rosewall, Lendl, Sampras, Roger for the most part in terms of injuries, etc. and others. Would some of them have won as often if they were crushed by a car in a parking lot in their prime? Luck is part of the game.

The non-seeds (128-32 = 96 players) are placed in the draw randomly at non-seeded
positions by a computer program before the draw ceremony begins. The 32 seeds are
placed in the 32 seeded positions (subjects to the constraints) during the draw ceremony.

La Monf is hiding in Grigor's Octant and may come out of it to face Fed in QF.

Isner just withdrew from Winston-Salem QF with a sprained ankle so he isn't exactly a threat right now. Del Potro-esque stupid scheduling pre-slam.

The injury is real. I saw a video clip on espn.com. But, it looks like it is not serious.
Also, Isner would run into Kohly in 3rd round and Isner had difficulty often against
Kohly and especially in grand slam events.

Tomas Berdych rang the bell. And it looks like a good draw for him, landing in Ferrer's quarter.

Yeah, wouldn't exactly bank on him beating Kohly. Good to hear it's not serious anyway though I didn't suspect it was as a strain is pretty minor and he has a few days off still. Btw is Davydenko listed in the draw? Didn't delve into it too much. I know he skipped Wimbledon and was assessing whether to keep playing or not.

Davy is not ranked high enough to get into the main draw of USO. He is probably eligible
to play in the qualifying and my guess is he choose not to play.

No disrespect to Monfils as he can be a real threat if he's concentrating, but if we're looking at him keeping his concentration long enough to get to the QF, let alone beating Roger in a five set match, as one of the potential spoiler situations in Fed's half of the draw, well, that's pretty indicative of how relatively kind his route is.

I think if one of the other seeds in Ferrer's quarter (Berdy, Cilic, Gulbis) can get to that semi final, they might give Roger a tough match. Whether they've actually got the balls to win the match knowing that the prize is a major final, though, is a much bigger question mark.

I think Murray got what he deserved in the draw.

He got what he deserved? No doubt that pre-draw Murray looked lucky but let's not pretend that Andy was the only player to benefit from Rafa pulling out. They all do. Some players have been luckier that others. Roger has no Rafa and no Novak until the final. Novak has a lousy draw and Andy's is a nightmare.

Andy had a chance to secure the no.8 seeding on his own and he blew it. Now he faces the consequences of that. No doubt he would have had to play Novak at some point. It may as well be the quarters. I'm just keeping my fingers crossed that he gets there.

For the record I'm gutted that Rafa is out. I would much rather see him playing and that was before the draw. ;)
