We don't have a trivia questions thread so I thought we may have one and here is my first question:

In 1913, three then young men who will become military leaders of three strongest European armies during World War II, lived in the same city. Name the leaders and the city.

Is the city in question Vienna?

Mmm. so I'm guessing Germany, Russia and Britain would be the three powers.

Now the military leaders... I'm guessing you mean military leaders in the sense of generals rather than political leaders?

No, no, not just army generals, but rather political/military leaders from WW2. I see @Billie read the same thing I did. It was Vienna 1913 and you @britbox were 2/3 correct. I'll give you a tip about the third country, I thought of 3 largest armies towards the end of WW2, so it wasn't Britain; Churchil didn't live in Vienna.

Hitler, Stalin are the two. And I am guessing the 3rd one has something to do with our former country, Mastoor?

Yes, Tito was the third, so I guess it was funny that the 3 major characters of WW2 all lived in Vienna in 1913. Trotsky too lived there at the time, he actually hosted Stalin with whom he was friends at the time. There are no evidences of any contacts between the "Russians" and the other two.

It is little known outside former Yugoslavia, that the second largest European army after Red Army in 1945 was Tito's Partizans with around 800,000 soldiers.

I don't know how many were stationed in continental Europe in 1945... Did you have a particular month in mind?

However, the British Army, which is a European Army was 3 million strong in 1945 and the Armed forces were 5 million strong.

That's quite a diversion from the opening question of "three strongest European armies during World War II". The British even had an additional 1.5 million in the Home Guard up until the end of 1944 when the Nazi threat to the island took a nosedive. Tito's partisans weren't one of the three strongest armies during World War II by any measure.

All my life I know that Tito's army was the second strongest in Europe after Red Army at the end of WW2, so I assume the reason they didn't count British was because British didn't have more than 800,000 soldiers in continental Europe at that time. Otherwise, I don't know why they would teach us "wrongly" because anyone knew there were several million soldiers stationed in Britain even before D Day.

So I guess I'd really like to know how many British soldiers were in continental Europe at the end of WW2 which is 9 May 1945.

^Probably a lot less than 800,000 in continental Europe on 9 May 1945. That wasn't your trivia question though. You said "during" WW2 and a European army - European armies fought beyond Europe during WW2... that's why it's called World War 2.

But how many of the European military leaders lived in Vienna in that year? That was also part of the trivia. I know every country probably has its own history from this period, but I scanned online and searched for references in English and many consider Tito's army as the most effective and one of the fiercest resistance armies in Europe at the time. I think Germans thought they would pass through YU easily towards Greece and they never suspected they would encounter such a resistance, which grew day by day. Due to resistance to them and trying to suppress it, the Germans had a policy of 100 for 1, meaning: for every single one of German soldiers that died they would kill 100 random people. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Yugoslav_Partisans

Anyway it's a good idea for trivia questions, I think, and we can learn a bit more about different things. I am trying to think of something that won't be easily solved in 10 seconds. LOL

^ The effectiveness of the Partisans isn't in doubt. I like playing Devil's advocate though.

Thread is a good and I'll try and think some up too.

OK == I 'LL bite -- i have lots of experience doing trivia games with seniors...
of course the idea is to at least try to guess or give answers if we already know or can recall them -- rather than take the easy out and go online *immediately* just to be able to give a correct answer...sometimes it's nicer to first do as we would were it in a ''live'' normal setting where people rely on what they have on hand or clues from what OTHERS can remember or contribute...tha'ts part of the game -- in normal circumstances...

but still -- it's up to the individual on the internet, right?
so i have a few, just off the cuff as i type...
===================================

which city is called the Venice of the North? ..and why?

which country has the current world's tallest building/structure?

WHICH of the two female Ancient Egyptian rulers was NOT egyptian -- and where was she from originally?

there is a kind of spider which will dangle from a twig of a tree, start to let the strong wind constantly blowing over a wide river between the two shores to carry its stream of silk line over and across the river -- even up to 200 feet wide and more-- until that line of web, several lines bunched together really, like ropes..--
is caught somewhere on the other side on a twig or tree ...
this ''silk rope" is threaded out by this spider as ONE Unbroken bunch of silk strands and the spider threads them out in such a way that they actually don't DISPERSE but travel in the wind closely packed together,,,such a beautiful thing to watch...

like a long, long lifeline -- and THEN it starts to weave a gigantic web across , above the rushing wide river...this is the way it catches its prey - anything flying that gets netted...and it then takes its time gorging on them...if its web gets shredded somehow, say - by really even stronger winds , rain, flying animals that are too big -- it simply starts all over again..it takes about one morning worth for it to finish is magnificent structure this way.
its silk -- like that of most spiders is stronger than steel..silk is too really..but of course with far more flexibility...the beauty of nature's genius..

and as if THAT is not amazing enough -- if the spider needs to START all over again -- it merely gathers back what it can - eats them -- so as not to waste anything-- and in LESS than FIFTEEN minutes its ready to thread it out again...now that FOR ''quick recovery" from an enormous effort!!

WHERE can this spider be found?

=================

there is a species of apes that is ruled by the females...and its way of keeping the peace - so that there are absolutely no violent matters -- is for anyone to have sex with anyone...adults to babies, babies to babies, female to male, male to male, female to female...if there any sign that anyone is gettting ''antsy'' to get into a fight -- someone immediately goes and have sex -- a few moments and it's over...lol

the ''make love not war" in its purest form, one might say..

WHAT is ape name?

============================
teh tallest peak above water is mt everest -- how much is it growing TALLER every year?

=========================

which continent is moving inexorably to eventually merge , in about 500 million years -- towards another continent? and HOW will this happen?

=================

there is a famous, legendary British Actress who ran to become the Mayor of London ..who is she?

======================

in the famous movie BEN-HUR -- charlton heston's character -- the champion of chariot races -- went into a catacombs outside the city and there he found what?

=====================

the 19th century ''piano rock star" , hungarian FRANZ LISZT wrote plenty of brilliant piano works --
one was a Hungarian Rhapsody subtitled
"the CARNIVAL of PEST".
What was he referring to?

RICHARD WAGNER was a german composer of the late 19th century -- a gigantic figure in western classical music whose revolutionary envisioning of staged music drama - was the precursor of ALL of today's ''entertainment" shows -- lighting, moving stages, placing of orchestra at the pit, the ideas of sound engineering in the hall, etc. etc.etc..those ideas of 'total dramatic presentation" under one conception--

is the direct predecessor of what is today called "the space drama" such as STAR WARS -- with its emphasis on highly effective musical drama to push the story forward...
RICHARD composed a series of music drama pieces called

"the RING OF THE NIBELUNGS"
WHAT was that about?

============================

THE famous american TV comedy -- THE LUCY AND DESI ARNAZ show was considered seminal and revolutionary in mass , tv entertainment --

WHAT was that ?

===============================
MARIAN ANDERSON was a legendary black american contralto beloved the world over for her incredibly rich, very rare low voice and her incomparable expressiveness and high artistic integrity and musicianship -- but she spent the best years of her voice singing abroad across the planet...

she came home to america when her voice was past its best - still unable to be engaged in the american opera houses and concert halls due to prejudice...

and was banned from singing to her people in her return at the LIBRARY OF CONGRESS when the ''all-white" WIVES OF THE CONSTITUTION" matrons refused permission...

so someone made sure not just america -- but the WORLD will hear MARIAN ANDERSON ON the FIRST GLOBAL LIVE PERFORMANCE Television broadcast across the planet...

who was that person that moved mountains to make this happen?
