Yeah, Nalbs took away one YEC right after Federer returned from missing the entire Fall with an ankle injury. Aside from that we are talking 1 MS final and a 2nd round match at the following MS. Nalbs was hardly a thorn in Roger's side during that period.

Although Fed had some initial problems with Nalby, he figured out how to deal with him and win against him (unlike of course, the Golden Retriever whom I want him to play in QF at WImby).

That's what makes a name for a player; who and when they win over a top player! Stan was a nobody for the most part, but he has 2 majors; winning over Nole, Rafa, and Roger! It can't be taken away from him! :clap  :dodgy: Nalbandian has come nowhere near as close in making significant history with a victory! That Masters' given away by Roger as far as I was concerned being up 2 sets 2 none! You can't let someone come back to beat you in those circumstances; no matter how bad the ankle! Complete the deal or just default like he did last year against Nole! :cover  :dodgy:

Stan is no longer a nobody that's for sure. He is not Roger and he probably won't even end up being a Murray but he has certainly carved out a notable career now and done so with some huge wins over all-time greats.

I'm sure he didn't lose too much sleep after it. Took Nalbs 5 sets to beat Fed just off crutches and Fed's consolation prize was winning the AO '06 a few weeks later. :p

IIRC, it really was more than a regular 5 set match; TB's involved! It was a true war of attrition after 2 very tight sets; 6–7(4–7), 6–7(11–13), 6–2, 6–1, 7–6(7–3)! :eyepop :cover :popcorn :p

Yeah, shows what it took for Nalbs to beat Roger who was just off crutches! That's the difference between best of 3 and best of 5. I was a big fan of Nalbandian but 5 set victories like that for him were few and far between.

Out of curiosity, I looked up who actually beat Roger during 2004-07. Roger lost only 24 matches during that span, compared to 315 wins - an overall 93 winning %.

Those 24 losses were from:
Tomas Berdych: Athens 04 Olympics
Dominik Hrbaty: Cincinnati 04
Gustavo Kuerten: Roland Garros 04
Albert Costa: Rome 04
Rafael Nadal (8): Miami 04, Roland Garros 05, Roland Garros 06, Rome 06, Monte Carlo 06, Dubai 06, Roland Garros 07, Monte Carlo 07
Tim Henman: Rotterdam 04
David Nalbandian (3): Tennis Masters 05, Paris 07, Madrid 07
Richard Gasquet: Monte Carlo 05
Marat Safin: Australian Open 05
Andy Murray: Cincinnati 06
Novak Djokovic: Rogers 07
Filippo Volandri: Rome 07
Guillermo Canas (2): Miami 07, Indian Wells 07

So yeah, Nalbandian is one of only three players to beat Roger more than once during his best four years - Rafa did it 8 times and Canas twice.

Only 24 matches lost from 2004-2007. That's absolutely nuts. Another record of Fed's that's not gonna be broken anytime soon.

Really? I guess I need to go look up the record! When it comes to near PERFECTION; I think BORG! Over a 4 year period, "24" would be a lot of losses for him! In his PRIME, even though he played a defensive style, he only lost "here and there;" almost negligibly! He single-handedly stopped Connors from winning 3 or 4 more Wimbledons, almost never lost to other top baseliners like Vilas, The Bagel Twins (Solomon/Dibbs), Gerulaitis, Orantes, and Nastase! That's what made it so criminal when the ATP gave him a hard time about taking some time off! He had to be mentally exhausted and being pulled in so many directions because "HE WAS TENNIS" from '78-81! What other sport does such a thing; actually cut it's own throat and wrote an awful episode in it's history? :cover :nono :dodgy:

Don't forget that Johnny Mac stole the crown from Bjorn in 1981, so Borg's reign was more accurately 78-80, or mid 81 (Wimbledon).

Borg's best four-year span was 1977-80. Take a look:

1971: 0-1
1972: 8-7
1973: 43-22
1974: 86-21
1975: 77-17
1976: 57-12
1977: 76-7
1978: 70-7
1979: 84-6
1980: 70-6
1981: 35-6
1982-84: 3-3
1991-93: 0-12

So Borg was 300-26 during 1977-80, just shy of Roger's 315-24.

Well make me a liar then! :clap :laydownlaughing  :dodgy: - Nice to know I was close!

bwahaha..I like it. el dude with the borg stats. rock on, :)

I poasted summat similar on talktennis a couple of years ago. except dozy me missed out the all important 1971 stats of 0-1, when borg lost in 1st round of Stockholm open on nov 1st/2nd 1971 to z franulovic..aged 15yrs 5months.

and I didn't poast the 300-26 thing at the end, I just added those peak year up in my head and then next thing..BOOM el dudes got it covered.

look at those 1981 match numbers though, only around 40 or so played,:-/ in 1981 I'm pretty sure he played fo-wimb-usopen as consecutive tourneys (?), no tennis at all between 3 majors. the borg fog of alienation, ennui, and hagridden existential woe was eating away his headband.

good to see its not just me poasting borg win/loss year stats.

Borg was my first favorite tennis player, Jesus, although when he played I was just a kid. But I vaguely remember watching him and McEnroe in 1980 or 81 I think, and not liking McEnroe. But I was 7ish so didn't really know anything!

Actually I think that was when he'd just come back from is ban. A lot of Argentinian players were getting in trouble at that time if I recall. Those wins might even be evidence of how the effects of doping can be persistent! :D
