It is too bad that Fedal didn't ignite a love for tennis in the United States where no one really cares about it, at least not since the 90s.

Well, he could have easily done so simply by emigrating to USA. Unfortunately, his home country ranks higher in overall quality of life than USA and so there is no incentive for him to do so.

Has Fedal finally mutated into one person? What will we do if Rafa and Fed fans can't fight with each other anymore! :cry :laydownlaughing

In order for Djokovic to pass Roger's 302 weeks he'd have to be #1 for next 3 years. He's about to turn 28. Not gonna happen unless all the younger guys decide to stop playing and let him have it. And I don't think that's going to happen. Obviously you can lose your edge and your game in a heartbeat. Look at Nadal. He started 2014 in a Slam final and won the French Open for his 14th Slam. Now he looks like he can't even remember how to play, went into a clay court semis saying he didn't think he could beat Nole and said earlier in the year that #1 is no longer a goal for him. And then look at Roger. He turned 29 and everybody started calling him old, has been, never gonna be #1 again, etc.

It's nice to have big goals and if players don't dream big then they'll never get anywhere, but as a regular schmoe I'm a realist - Nole's probably not even going to pass Connors. Eventually some young gun is going to knock him off the #1 spot just like it's happened every other #1 player. Everybody gets old. It's a fact of life. And playing the way he does - 3-6 hour matches? Unless he finds a B and C game plan and cuts his match time in half - he'll be Nadal in a year's time and lucky to last until he's 30.

BTW - please don't crap on me. I like Nole. I just don't think he's going to pass Roger. He's too old. How many guys have maintained the #1 spot from 28-31? Nobody that I can think of and I've been following tennis a long time.

"When" was a process. "How" is he saw how hard Rafa and Roger performed day in and day out, got tired of being the third fiddle, decided to do something about it, changed everything from his diet to his serve to his practice , fixed his shaky forehand and became a monster.

I blame Roger and Rafa for creating this monster!;)

^Lol! If only it just took more hard work. Nole has got SERIOUS talent.

The British media like to put it about that Andy Murray is on a par, but that is patently not the case. I would say that Nole is a once in a generation guy, but he's a 3 times in a generation guy clearly :D

Went and checked the tennis section of the Telegraph after Novak won MC - only pictures of Andy's wedding, no tennis coverage. At least the Daily Mail had an article about the win.

Yes it's a joke. If it was Fedal they would probably say something because in their minds both of those two transcend national boundaries now. But they don't feel that way about Novak yet

Ignorant folks. Frankly, they never at par. They were closer in the 2009-10 period, but starting 2011, Novak took off and distanced himself from Andy.

Yes American sportswriters tend to be very insular. I might be wrong but even old Roger hasn't won Sports Illustrated Sportsman of the year at his peak. I remember one year when Dwayne Wade won it instead of him :nono

The one thing Novak has going for him is that I think his game will age well. Even if he loses half a step he should always have a great offensive game where he can do damage off both wings, and his great return of serve will be there. Also, he never gets seriously injured. Having said that, even if he wins a calendar slam this year he'd have to win 6 more slams after age 28 to catch the mighty one. I don't see it happening.

^I'm not so sure. A big part of his game is his retrieval, and you need speed to be able to maintain balance with ease, and also for timing. It might be that his game will age well, but I suspect he'll have to adapt as he'll become less good at certain things. It's natural for everyone to talk as if the Novak now will last forever, but....

I think one of the first things that goes away as you age is your ability to return serve.
A millisecond slow reflex would completely change the return. Return being a major strength
of Novak's game, it would suffer seriously with age.

Yes, but i dont see that when under 30 years old. Check boxers, F1 drivers, and some other sports.

I think even after 30 it's not a given. Agassi had a great return until well into his thirties. Also Ferrer, at 33, still has an elite return of serve if you look at the numbers. I honestly think Novak has the game to play very well into his thirties. Whether he's winning grand slams at that age is another issue.
