Every big tournament is like a movie you've seen before: you know how its going to end. I love Roger, really appreciate Rafa and Novak, and can tolerate Andy, but boy am I sick of these guys winning every single big tournament.

And now its worse, with really only one of them winning most everything. Novak has won six of the last seven big tournaments, and sixteen of the last twenty-one.

This tour needs a shake-up. Badly.

Yeah, pretty much.

This isn't sour grapes - I'm not complaining that Roger isn't winning. He had his day. I'm complaining that it feels like every big tournament is almost a foregone conclusion. It is tediously repetitive.

Yea, the process is always different. Focus on that and not the outcome.
Today, Kei was close to his very best. He is already in the top 4 of the 2016 race and if he keeps this up he will be top 4 by the second half of the season.
I bet on him winning something big soon.

Me, I was bored the Fedal fest. Now, as a Novak fan, can't get enough:lolz:

Get over it. :popcorn

We suffered through it when the "maestro" won everything in sight.

Well, I wasn't just kvetching about Novak, although he's the main culprit right now, and it certainly has been particularly predictable for almost two years now.

But the Big Four have been dominating the sport for thirteen years now, going back to 2004. I for one would like to see a bit more variety and I'm guessing you would too if your boy wasn't on top.

When Fed was winning everything, it was so boring I was watching the WTA. I'm glad you're bored. I'm glad you're so tired of it that you starts threads like this. Makes me happy. :D

This and other sites complain about this being a weak era because of these same players "winning just about everything!" I wouldn't call it weak; well not physically anyway, but mentally the rest of the field is pathetic! :cover :nono

You know, some of these young kids are showing a lot of promise - not just with their skill set, but with their fight. I'm more excited about the future than I have been in some time. Meanwhile I am enjoying watching Novak play the game. I thought the match with Rafa was something special. And the hitting between he and Nishikori was ridiculously good for huge swaths of the match. The other youth will begin punching through soon enough.

I said it in the Kyrgios thread, the problem is that when the young guns make head way they aren't making the necessary transitions to take it to the next level things like looking at your team, fitness, scheduling all of these matter in your tennis development, and those who are serious about being a champion make those decisions. It makes me wonder if someone like Kyrgios, Thiem, etc. actually took these steps a bit earlier if we could be having a different conversation now.

I mean if you look at players like Novak, Rafa, and Roger their fitness level is and was at their peaks on an entirely different level from everyone else.

Roger's fitness level isn't anything special and is very much overrated. He's lost a lot of matches due to running out of gas and always relied on winning matches fast before it got to be a long match and if it did, he often lost. Rafa, Novak and Andy are much fitter. Other than that I agree 100% Sad to say but tennis is no longer as much about shot making and skill as it is about stamina. They need to fix the court speeds 'cos the game is going downhill fast for many. If people want to watch Pong I recommend playing emulator games 'cos that's all most matches on slow/medium paced courts are like now :nono Most of the courts bar a handful are the same speed so there's very little diversity. It's all just run, retrieve, run, retrieve, etc. No matter how fast or hard the opponent hits the ball the shots can still be run down a lot of time. Nonsense compared to past eras. I'll go as far as to say if the court speeds were like they were even 10 years ago Federer at even close to 35 would still be beating Djokovic more. You need only look to the faster courts like Cinci and Dubai to see proof of that. They're 2 of the fastest ones left that actually reward shot making and make Duracell bunny running and retrieval much harder.

Well yeah now they are I would say, but at his peak Federer was quite fit. You don't go as long as Federer did without injury by not being extremely fit. The amount of time Federer went in the sport without injury was unreal.

For the most part it was down to him winning fast. Even now at almost 35 he averages many slam matches at 1.5 hours. Compare that to the other top guys and it's easy to see why he's remained largely injury free.

When Fed was winning everything in sight, even though the end result was not in doubt, it was not boring as his impressive shot making made it worthwhile to watch.

However, when Novak or Rafa are winning everything in sight, it is mostly due to baseline attrition wars and that is why things are boring.

Tis true, but I'll take Nole over Rafa anytime! :dodgy:

Can't blame Federer for not being a moron and wasting his body away in 3-5 hour matches when an hour and a half will do.

There was some talk about tournaments increasing 'fuzz on the balls' [and perhaps other parameters such as pressure or weight]. Heterogeneity of 'surfaces' also includes the ball parameters and numerous other factors. The primacy of endurance, physical and mental, is also a feature of homogeneity. Skill is not. The rise in the mean age of champions is simply because tennis is now an endurance sport. Go check the mean ages of Cycling, Marathon, even Formula one champions. Or astronauts. Preparing for a major these days is anyway like preparing for a fortnight of space travel.

How can an entire tennis generation in this day and age be comprised of 100% mental midgets? We know that aura/awe/intimidation plays a huge role. The Very Big Players control every aspect the sport to a disproportionate degree because of $$$ they generate. How do you expect talented but green players to remain unaffected on the court by the enormous power the VIP players wield both on and off the court? Heck even umpires and tournament organizers are p&$%^ng their pants.

A VIP player can put an ATP 1000 out of business by not taking it seriously. Solution? Please every VIP player. How? Homogeneity...and maybe a $2M to sweeten the deal. Spontaneity means nothing. Go figure why even an extremely talented rookie will find it very very hard to breakthrough.
