I saw Joe Ely in concert tonight, and he put me in mind of Jimmie Dale Gilmore. Possibly the most achingly beautiful song about heartbreak ever:

I went to see the great Bob Dylan last night in Dublin. It was the best I've seen him, he was singing beautifully, he had songs spanning six decades and his band were tight, his voice was strong, he was witty, and menacing, and lively throughout. The chap is 73 years old. He sang six songs off his latest album (Tempest, 2012), and they were as great as anything.

After a while I just sat back and basked in the man's unique presence. It was a performance that lived up to his legend - and that's saying something. :)

Did he, by chance, sing anything from the old Basement Tapes records he made with The Band back in 1967-68? Songs like Goin to Acapulco, Under That Apple Sucklin Tree, etc.?

He didn't, Shawn: here's the setlist.

Only 3 songs from the sixties. Here's a YouTube vid of him singing Forgetful Heart in Dublin, a highlight of the show:

I got the new Lana del Ray CD the other day, Ultraviolence. I loved her last one, and this is of a similarly high quality. At first, I was a tad put off by its rock sound. Born in Time was more moody and musical, whereas this seemed moody and heavy, but I've been listening to both discs on scramble, with songs bouncing in at random from either disc, and Ultraviolence holds its own.

As young Ralph might say, "happy for that!"

Just a couple of bands participating in a 3-day rock festival in my city over the weekend:

A Danish superstar I present to you - Aura Dione - she is a multi-platinum selling Danish recording artist of Faroese, Spanish, French and Danish origin. In 2008 she released her debut album, Columbine. The album spawned the hit single "I Will Love You Monday (365)" which reached number one in Germany, achieved over 80 million video views and was certified platinum. After winning the European Border Breaker Award in 2011, Aura won Best Female Artist and Hit of the Year for Geronimo in the Danish Music Awards 2012 and Female Artist of the Year in 2013; she is one of Denmark's top two female recording artists and one of Germany's top three. Now living in LA, Aura is currently in the studio recording new material with some of the world's most prestigious producers. Her new album is set for release in 2014 and will be the first release available outside central and Eastern Europe. It will be her third album and the first since 2011. Listen to the lyrics - pretty cool IMHO.

One of my all time favorites, and the last minute is just superb. I love to hear ol' Rickie Danko wail a song like this. Robbie Robertson's understated crisp playing on acoustic guitar is tasteful. Then we have Garth Hudson--the mad genius--leading the others on the horns. What a band.

I don't know how to make the image appear, but I think the tune is there. It is the magnificent "Unfaithful Servant" from their eponymous second album self-titled The Band a/k/a the Brown album.

Always loved this song... and liked the video even better. Coverdale's wife at the time was MTV dynamite in this video... I think it was the most played MTV video for a long time. Tawny Kitaen was smoking.

I always liked Coverdale and Whitesnake. Saw them live in 06. Still had a half decent voice then and I believe it's semi-reasonable now although in traditional aged rocker fashion - he turns the mike to the crowd to sing the high notes... which is a bit of a get out clause IMO... You don't pay good money to hear the crowd singing his songs. He's far from unique this respect - loads of them do it.
