Let's talk a bit about it, because it's only possible this year for one man: Novak Djokovic.

How far can he go?

Well, the only guy who could possibly pull it off started off right. Nadal's reign at the French has got to end sometime right? If Djoko can actually figure out how to beat Nadal at the FO, then his chances are going to be very very good. Maybe the best chance of anyone since Federer '06-'07.

:laydownlaughing OMG He had some difficulties winning today.

I'll say it is very hard to do and let's leave it at that. I've been called delusional before.

If, by any chance and luck, he manages to win FO, then I might talk about it. That is my honest opinion.

Even if Nole won the FO, he still has Wimbledon and US Open to win. And while hardcourt is his best surface, the USO may be the hardest to win. And interesting stat: Since 2012 Djokovic has 2 pre-FO clay Masters titles but only one US Open Series Masters title.

While Nadal on clay probably the toughest opponent one can face, excluding him the opposition is stronger on hardcourt than on clay.

Let him first win Career Grand Slam and then he can think about calendar year grand slam.

This is all hypothetical, but the fact remains that Nole is pretty darn good on grass and hardcourts, winning 2 Wimbledon titles and 1 USO with numerous finals. The biggest hurdle would be FO still, imo. Not saying that he would win Wimbledon and USO titles easily but at least he won those in past while he has never won FO. And potentially winning FO, that would give him some major confidence boost and he would be approaching the other 2 majors with careful preparation, unlike in the past 2 years.

I still think it is almost impossible to win all 4 in the same year.

As I said in another thread, this becomes a serious topic of conversation after Novak wins Roland Garros. Until then, well, he's got to get past the greatest clay courter in history at his best tournament.

Ya, Do you think I forgot that Kieran started a thread to watch the "progress" of Roger
towards YE #1 last year. Until then Rog was doing fine. :nono

As others have mentioned - the hardest thing to do in the sport. But, I think he's got the best chance since Federer back around 2005/2006.

I wouldn't even think that highly of his chances if he pulls off RG this year. A little different from Fed's prime where Wimbledon and USO were a foregone conclusion. Nole has just been one of the favorites on the fast courts. IMO he's done well to win 2 Wimbledons and has done very poorly at USO to only have 1 at this point. Clearly the slippery and faster grass should be a worse surface for Nole than USO in theory. To summarize, I don't think he wins Wimbledon this year but maybe he finally breaks out at the USO again.

Here is one way of thinking about it. In his entire life, he was won three slams after January.
What makes people think that in just one year, he will match his lifetime tally?

What we do know is that the one guy who has the best chance of anyone to pull it off is Djokovic. And he accomplished the first step by taking the AO. So it is definitely going to be interesting. I wouldn't bet on it but at least we get to talk about it this year.

Just wondered: What is Djokovic accomplishes the Calendar Grand Slam? He would finish the year with 11 GS titles, 4 WTF, 20+ Masters titles, an Olympic bronze medal and a Davis Cup. Would this push him past Nadal in the GOAT race?

Well for starters if Novak wants to get his career slam, the last player to win the AO and Roland Garos titles was Jim Courier in 1992.

Every time Novak wins the Australian Open title this is brought up by the way.

Yeah and he didn't even make it in his super year of 2011 so chances are slim.

Don't forget that it would be his 4th year-end #1. I'm not sure he would surpass Nadal yet, but it would get him pretty darn close. A calendar Grand Slam would at least get him in the "inner circle" of all-time greats (which I count as, in chronological order:Tilden, Gonzales, Rosewall, Laver, Borg, Sampras, Federer, and Nadal).

A good moment to talk about this would be if Djokovic wins both the French and Wimbledon, not a second earlier.

Aw, but it's always fun to speculate. And it's better than talking about players' misbehaving girlfriends/fiancees/wives or the decibel levels of Sharapova's screams. :devil

While this is a good point, the questionable state of his two main threats makes this a bigger possibility this year. But yeah, it's still early.
