Has anyone seen MZ play? He is impeccable at the net. A serve and volleyer. If he is on, it is not easy to beat him. I wonder what improvement he made to suddenly surge like this. I know he was injured for long stretches throughout his career. I really enjoy watching the short points. The endless rallies of the modern game gets tiresome.

Before Sasha and looking up his BIO, I didn't know anything about his brother! All of a sudden he's tearing it up; upsetting the top seed after being a perpetual qualifier! How does this happen to Stan? He handles the best Nole can offer in 3 major wins & then forgets how to play in a 500 vs an "also-ran!" No wonder he's owned by Roger! :nono

Makes you wonder how good that best is that No2e has to offer. :laydownlaughing

Few have said Nole's great; more he's the most consistent player out there winning not only majors, but cleaning up scraps by owning Masters 1000 events as well taking 4,5 or 6 a year! No one else can say that; including Fedal! They're close, but Nole's 2015 was unprecedented and set him apart for all time; close to the likes of Laver and Rosewall! Roger's still the GOAT, but Nole will end up "right behind him" & just ahead of Sampras & Nadal IMO! :dodgy:

In the system I used to rank players, Novak has finally officially passed Rafa - just by a hair, but it happened. I have second system that is more weighted towards more important accomplishments like Slam titles and year-end #1 rankings and Novak is ahead in that as well.

Cilic wins the final in straights. He's just a bad matchup for Nishi.

Awful finish by Nishi to DF in the TB while serving at 5-6.
Cilic wins by 6-1, 7-6 and makes a big move to make the WTF finals.
He jumps over Berdych in the rankings and Tomas will fell out of the top 10 for the first time in about 6 years.

I feel like Kei is the new Ferrer: he's a very good and consistent player, but doesn't have that extra to make him a true elite. Like Ferrer he probably can't win a Masters (let alone a Slam) on his own power; he needs the top players to be upset, and then he can win it. Remember that Ferrer's only Masters title was against Jerzy Janowicz; the only top 10 player he beat to win it was Tsonga in the QF.

I agree to an extent. I actually think Ferrer is a better athlete than Kei, but Kei is the better player IMO. On occasion Kei can beat the players ahead of him in slams. What I'm baffled with is sometimes he plays down to the level of his competition.

Add to that Kei has a poor serve most of the time and is often injured which makes winning big events much tougher than they should be.

Cilic is inside Kei's head

Yeah, it isn't the best comp because they are at least moderately different as players. I suppose I should have said, or what I meant, is that Kei might fill a similar role as Ferrer has, as the best of the second tier players but not an elite himself.

Still, I can't shake the level we saw a couple years ago when he almost beat Rafa at Monte Carlo but got injured. Where is that player?

Actually, it was Madrid, and most of us Rafa fans have conceded that will go down as a L for the KOC because Rafa had zero answers for Kei that Sunday.
