I think Thiem has gained some serious confidence from the Nadal match, although he lost, that he can compete on hard courts.

He reached the finals at RG. So, you would think he had confidence in his play prowess. But, he lost in the first round of 250 in his hometown on clay. It is difficult to estimate how confidence works.
