You have to give Caroline a lot of credit. I think her marathon match tuned Serena up for the kind of balls she would need face today.

Slap, bang, wallop - it's over. Revenge is a dish best served with a gruesome fist pump...

Well, Serena ends her year on a great note in preparation for Australia after an up and down year.

Poor fans. Didn't get a classic match compared to last year where it went 3 sets.

She bagged the last two biggies, so not a bad season after all....

Wasn't bad at all. She won 7 titles (a PM, major, YEC and a few others), sustains the #1 ranking despite not bringing it at the first 3 majors.

Scary part is, she doesn't have much to defend in the majors next year and can actually increase her lead again w/ some excellent play.

Well takeaways from this tournament:

Serena will have her bad days, but she is still one tough cookie.

She is now 1400 ahead of Maria in the rankings, so not playing Brisbane next year won't hurt her in the rankings until possibly Australia depending on how both do.

Ana Ivanovic is now in the top 5 again.

Serena's third threepeat of a tournament.

Simona did great on her debut making the final. She has a slam in her future. I am thinking her first will be the French Open.

Also, Serena how has 64 singles titles to her name.

Ooh wee. Singapore is giving Serena a special flower named for her. Impressive! :clap Now, if they just straighten out that overhead light situation, the next 4 years may be golden.

Simona is currently like a lot of players we've seen who can be implacable destroyers in the early rounds, but once the spotlight's on full blast and the gold bullion at stake, she drops a calf. She went away too handily today, losing the last 8 games, and her last five service games. Regardless of how well Serena played - and she's the most formidable force in WTA - this is disappointing. I think she has it in her to have a few dominant seasons in the sport when Serena tails off, but she really needs to win big somewhere next season...

I have had the pleasure to watch many Great Champions in the many years of tennis,Serena Williams is one of the most amazing tennis athlete's to have ever picked up a tennis racquet.I truly believe when Serena decides to hang up her racquet she will be considered one of the All Time Greatest Player,to have played the game.In the meantime I will just sit back and watched her weave her tennis magic.

Congratulations Serena, first and foremost retaining the No 1 position and defending your title at the YEC 2014.I am soo proud to be a fan.Now go and have some rest time, you deserve it.See you in 2015.

Azarenka started out that way as well. It took a few years of hovering in the top 10 before she put it all together and started winning the big moments.

Congrats to Serena for her championship - a well deserved end of the year. A congrats to Simona for her tournament you won many fans in Singapore - well done both of you and have a well deserved off season.

Singapore you did a great job and to me you can have all the championship tournaments you like - perfect - except for the lights! - but that's a problem I'm sure you solve before next time. It seems like all players have enjoyed the hospitality and atmosphere and I'm sure they'll do what they can to be there next year.

I think Simo can win big at the French next year unless Serena decides she wants to focus and win another one. I think the Simo's and Caro's are coming into their own. I think both of those women should work on their serve in the off season. I think Serena should work on maintaining her aggression. She has to work on coming forward more as it helped her out quite a bit in this match.

Speaking of Azarenka, she is currently #32 in the world. I hope that changes quickly because if she finds her form quickly that will be quite a nightmare for any top player who might run into her early. I wonder if she might receive a modified seeding in Australia since she has performed well there.

Only if she qualifies for a protected ranking. In order to do that she would need to be out for at least 6 months and make an application w/ the WTA.

Hmmm I doubt that...Wimbledon seems to be the only GS that acknowledges the past performances of players that have done well there.
