Maria Sharapova is out of the U.S. Open.

The 2006 champion withdrew Wednesday because of bursitis in her right shoulder.

"Maria has informed us that she will be unable to compete at the U.S. Open this year due to a right shoulder bursitis and has withdrawn from the tournament," according to a statement from U.S. Open tournament director David Brewer. "We wish her a speedy recovery and look forward to her return to New York next year."

Agnieszka Radwanska will move up to the No. 3 seed in women's singles. Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova becomes the No. 32 seed."

The draw for the year's last Grand Slam tournament is Thursday. Play begins Monday.

Sharapova had been in the news the day before over rumors she had planned to change her name for the duration of the event to Sugarpova, her line of gummy candies.

She attended a promotion Tuesday night in Manhattan for Sugarpova.

My teeth are hurting just over the notion of "Sugarpova," and I'm sure that's a joke, but bad news that she's out. Wasn't her worst injury-out due to shoulder? That's a shame.

That's unfortunate. She will lose SF points and fall further behind Vika. I wish her a speedy recovery.

This means it will be between Serena, Vika and the rest of the tour. Most probably for the rest of the year.

The idea of Maria going to the US Open without a coach didn't make sense either.

Heck, I think this withdraw works to her advantage! She loses points but so what? She will be sitting pretty at #3 anyway.

No speedy recovery here. Sounds serious, reports indicate out 4 months. If similar to other shoulder injuries, I know about Alexsandra Wozniak's, and her injury required nearly six months of recovery, with just one game being played from October. She of course is now back on tour. I agree Kiu it could work to her advantage, still lots of points left in the "bank". Maybe the time off will allow her to get her emotions in order and get away from the limelight.

Is Maria getting ready for a life without tennis? If the shoulder has major damage, can she return twice from an injury that is usually career ending?

Tough questions you are asking there Colleen.
;)
As a "Correspondent" I am going to ask a few myself!
Isn't it easy to blame an old injury to take some time off?
Hasn't Maria been "Decimated" in every Final she faced Serena?
Isn't it true Maria has no coach?

Could it be she is thinking--> OK, I am going to let Vika and the rest of the tour beat up on Serena for the rest of the year, then may be I come back by the time Moscow starts, I'll get a great tune-up, big time fanfare in Russia which I have never been to...Then I roll into the end the year at the YEC!!?

Would that not be a great Strategy?

She will most probably still be number 3 or at the worst Aggie may overtake her.

You know something? After the publicity stunt Sugarpova crap, I hope she is out of the open. To hell with these bloated ego eejits, they're unimportant in the big scheme. Go sit on the side and eat your junk food sugar sweets, sell them to fat kids and teach them how a healthy tennis player eats...

she is somehow losing her way ....her agent is becoming too brazen ,he should reign in that ego.I think the agent is using the WTA in complience with Stacy to put pova as the face of the tour..they used that 40-love thing to promote Maria only. The agent puts out these stories about pova s money like its the only thing that matters and women tennis is losing its credibility.Sugarpova is being promoted like WTA candy not Maria s candy...

And an early loss at Wimbledon, in the same day as Cilic.

Kiu, you had me until "Vika and the rest of the tour beat up on Serena", not in this life time buddy, lol:laydownlaughing
That said, maybe time off is what she needs so she can prioritize whatever she has going on.
Any way, I hope that she takes care of her health problems and return quickly to tennis. The WTA needs fierce competitors such as Maria (Sugar) Sharapova!
PS, not trying to be snarky, but where are all the "silent ban" conspiracy theorists?

Yes, "sources" say it is the same shoulder, here is a Matt Cronin article in Tennis.com

please, they act as though her shoulder was amputated and reattached. The surgery she had was 20mins in and out. Another thing I notice whenever she loses a match she's always making excuses about some injury and she has been doing this since she got her ass whupped at the Olympics. If you all believe she has a shoulder injury then I have a bridge I would like to sell you. Maria is running from the press because of the stupid candy ploy and the coaching situation. She does not want to answer any questions and by the time she's back on tour it will be forgotten and no one will question her about the Jimmy coaching debacle or the candy stuff. BTW she had laser surgery.
