Jaded Serena Williams withdraws from Pan Pacific Open

Thursday, Sep 19, 2013, 12:43 IST | Agency: Reuters

Williams, who won her fifth US Open singles title this month, was the latest high-profile withdrawal from the Sept. 22-28 tournament after Russian Maria Sharapova also pulled out last week to recover from a right shoulder injury.

Women's world number one Serena Williams has pulled out of next week's Pan Pacific Open in Tokyo citing fatigue, Japan's Kyodo news agency reported on Thursday.

"I'm disappointed to have to withdraw from the Pan Pacific Open, which I was very much looking forward to playing this year," the American was quoted as saying.

"Unfortunately with the number of matches I have played throughout the summer I need more time to properly recover."

What else is new?
Serena has paid her dues this season and has played all her entered events but this one....plus we all know she never plays in Japan for some unknown reason.

Good for her, she has played more than the other top 3. She needs to rest, she's not in her 20's.

If only more women had withdrawn from these events over the years. Too many players retiring young. Serena scheduled wisely and remains (and will continue to remain) at the top of the mountain well into her 30s.

Agree, I am so glad she pulled out. She needs all the rest she can get. She carried the WTA on her back all by herself for the majority of the season.

Exactly. look at Caroline, does anyone seeing her playing pass 26, 27? She has already admitted she was mentally fatigue from playing 20 or more events a year.

Smart on Serena's part, year number 1 is a lock.

Jaded is just another way of saying fatigued. Why are people questioning it? She's withdrawn citing fatigue.

She's simply tired after a busy year, and needs some time off. I wouldn't read anything into it beyond that.

Thank you for letting us know, Ozza. :)

In the US usage, yes, but in the British usage, it is more neutral, and tends to mean only "tired." (And I see the citation is from an Indian publication, so they would use it more likely in the British way.)
